Slowly working on the rear bumper for the 80.

.250 plate for the mounts and .250 square tubing for the reciever. Going to support the wings to the frame with some square tubing also.

Looking good. You have some real talent.

Matt,

Watching your fab skills improve has been a total kick in the ass. I mean it.

Few more progress pics. The wings are going to be modified just a bit, so thats not what they will look like when finished.

Looks a lot like Luke's bumper. You've got your technique down. Off topic, but what bender did you go with?

Yeah it is kinda similiar. I wanted to go with a style like the rear bumper i had on the rover, but I had to leave room for the spindles.

Its the JD2 model 3. I bought it from Van Sant. I made the mount for the HF air/hydro ram which was a cheap conversion that works great. (Metalworking Tools - Metal Fabricating Equipment at Van Sant Enterprises' Trick Tools.com)

Just recently added castors to it too.

Any more pics of how the ram attaches!?
That's great stuff there!!
One thing that has been bugging me about getting a bender is having to mount it to the concrete.
What you came up with there looks to be a GREAT set up that is also very mobile for storage, one thing I'm growing short in supply in.

I like the JD models of benders. I also like the idea of a Co-op style ownership of a bender. One guy purchases the bender and parts, while another guy purchases the dies.

I've looked at the SWAG offroad mount for the air/hydro, but yours looks cleaner.

I think your fab skillz need a lot more work. Maybe you could bring all those shiny tools over to my place and build a couple hundred hours of projects so you can do better work on your own stuff.

This would all be free for me of course, since you would be learning on the job...

If you decide to take me up on this, please bring lots of your favorite beverage and food, since I am too cheap to provide those either..:)

The hard part about sharing a bender would be the weight. This thing is HEAVY!

hahaha :grinpimp:

what project are you working on Will?

Heres a few more pics....

Used some welding wire as a guide for the plasma cutter. Bending 1/4" plate and making it do what you want isnt easy! :hillbilly:

Nice touch.

Right now i'm not getting anything done, maybe in a few weeks i may get started on some sliders for my tow pig.

The best way to bend steel like that is with heat and an anvil.

I agree, that was a nice touch.

I agree. I just wish I had an anvil and heat! My oxy setup is on E, so no go there. I sliced the steel into pieces, bent it to fit, welded it back up, and then hit it with a flap disc.

Wasnt too hard, but not nearly as easy as it could have been if I had full tanks on the torch.

If I recall, there was a thread somewhere on getting tanks on the weekends, and there was a business in town that was open and had good prices.

If you think dies for the benders are expensive, try pricing a 200lb + anvil. I search the C-list for them regularly and I'm constantly amazed at the prices people will pay for them. I'm not talking about the crap coming out of China either.

You said .250 for the plate for the mounts what are you using for the shell?

Some progress... Still waiting on the tire carrier spindles from Comp4x4, so once those show up I can weld them in and send the bumper to powdercoat.

Guessed pretty darn good on the length of tubing! It ended flush with the follow bar as I hit the 70* mark.
