With the resto/mod I'm doing to my 75 Fj40, I will be building a new rear bumper. The current rear cross member is not reusable so I was thinking of just building one out of square/rectangle tube.

My frame as been boxed in this area and I was thinking of using 2 pieces of angle iron on each side of the frame rail (bolted thru with 3x 1/2" grade 8 bolts and spacers in the frame) to give me a mouting surface for the bumper. Then I would bolt the bumper to the angle iron with 4x 1/2" grade 8 bolts. I would also add 2x frame gusset at a 45deg angle (like stock but beefier) to make sure I would have a stong bumper to tow with.

I will be building my own tire carrier and using the Ipor spindle as my starting point.

So with all of this said... How big of a square/rectangle tube will I need to make my bumper to accomadate all of the above? The frame height is around 4" so that gives me one dimension but how far out would I need to go to accomadate for a tire carrier? What are the dimension for the back of the tub to the original crossmember and how far pass the tub should I be for the tire carrier?

I need to go out and buy the tube in the near future so I can start mounting my new tub to the frame so any help here would be greatly appreaciated.

Good info in the link above.

Anybody out there using the Ipor spindle would know how much pass the tub I have to be to build a strong tire carrier (using square tubing) ie 2", 2.5" 3" pass the tub???
