Being bored at work I took a few hours and built a bumper in Google SketchUp. Very slick program once you learn how to use it.

The only thing it's missing is I'd like to have a receiver in the middle for light towing or an additional recovery point. The rollers for the winch cable are probably a bit too close to the center too, they'd be closer to the left fairlead. (I'm planning on running a rear mounted front/rear winch.)

My main focus for it was departure angle. I will be cutting off the factory cross member to improve clearance.

I also wanted it simple/easy to build, so that's why it's very angular.

Next step, remove the factory rear bumper and cut off the cross-member, then mock-up the bumper with cardboard.

And here's some comparison shots of the rear bumper to the "stock" bumper.

And because I am that bored, I made a front bumper too.

Basically similar to the factory one, but simpler and tighter...

(And yes, one of the d-shackles placement is screwed up.)

nice sketch dood!

my 80 really needs some bumpers but that is way down on the list.. ARB on the front would be cool, maybe custom on the rear. I really like TOY350's but just don't want to lay down the $$$..

You are going to need more tread on those tires.

Looks good!

Where'd the truck model come from? Did you make that too? and do my truck next! :D

The truck model came from Google SketchUp's warehouse. I don't have *THAT* much time, it took me 8 hours to do the two bumpers, the entire truck would probably take me days.

It looks like someone already did one anyway:

Though that is the newer body style....

There are only 2 4 Runner models available, while there are 8 Land Cruiser models. Just goes to show who's the smarter owner.... :hhmm:

Are you kidding? Racing slicks would work *GREAT* for rock crawling.

Once.

Looks good, let us know how it works out ; p

Do you have plans for actually starting it?

I plan on cutting off the rear bumper this week, weather permitting.

While I somewhat like the first front bumper I built, it's kinda a OEM style bumper if Mad Max was the designer.

Here's another one I did. It's inspired by Slee's. If Slee's bumper married the OEM bumper, this might be one of their children. :grinpimp:

you sir are mad.

a mad :grinpimp:!
watching this thread has become my new priority in life, I really want to do the rear bumper along those lines, although a rear winch is not on my list. The front can wait, good angles, don't mind the looks, but if you are bored again today (hint hint) I'm thinking something with radiator protection like the short bus from slee, but a taller center section stinger to hang lights, bash trees and thwart suicidal quadrapeds. that program make tubular shapes and compound bends?

keep it coming, you da man, man.

You mean something like this? :grinpimp:

Yes the stinger is off a bit, it's slightly lopsided. Still gives you an idea of how it looks. I suspect that the front winch won't be able to exit there, it's too close to center. I would probably have to mount it on the lower section to the right of the shackles.

If I moved the rollers there, then the kick in at the center would be a perfect spot to mount lights. (I *HATE* lights on the top of the stinger, and I strongly dislike lights that block airflow to the radiator.)

Looks good man! That's the look I'm looking for for the FJ. So SK works this weekend so if weather is permiting I'll be free....accept for the two monkeys. But we you could come over this way if weather is decent.

Well....I *SUPPOSE* we can figure out a way to do a body swap from an 80 to an FJC...

I just might take you up on that offer! Gotta test out the new parts for your plasma cutter, right? :D

There's a large chunk of that 4 gauge left, and I might swing by the metal yard and pick up some more. Thinking of using 4 gauge for the spots where it's going to get hit a lot, and something thinner (6-10 gauge) for everything else.

I nominate ebag for club design guy:D!!

that's a cool program to play with it seems, is it shareware? does it take a long time to download? can I choose white with arma'd flares and lower doors for my mockup?

:hhmm:curious minds....

HOLY CRAP !!!

that is a sweeeet program, took three minutes to download and I have dissected an orange 80 series to it's component parts already, what fun, thanks buddy
