I started to notice a "metallic squeal" coming from the driver side rear brakes yesterday. looks like the brakes on that side just started to score into the rotor. caught me a little off guard, i thought I had more life left in them. Prev owner had pads and rotors done 20k mi ago, not sure what brand, it was done at an independent shop(i have all the service records, but the receipt doesnt say what kind). I still need to pull the wheel and get an idea if it is just the pads. But anyway, what are people doing for pads on rotors on these? We arent off-roading in it, its one of our daily drivers.

A lot of people will tell you to go OEM. They're probably right!

I personally chose to go with Autozone's Duralast Gold (I think that's what they call it) pads and rotors. I don't have a comparison to new OEM but they do in fact work well. You'll find a few others that like them as well.

I went with OEM pads and rotors all around (since old rotors were dished) from an online toyota parts store. 10k so far and no issues! In fact, went on a 7k mile RT a week after the install

Powerstop makes very good alternate to OEM stuff. They have drilled and slotted, zinc coated rotors and true ceramic pads.

Most of the stuff you buy at auto zone, advanced, yada yada, have metallic filler in the pads. This is the reason they can offer a lifetime guarantee on the pads because they chew the rotors to crap or warp them due to heat buildup, before you even start to wear the pads.

Oh, also, you may want to check if you need to replace this pin. It's the lower slide pin on the caliper, and it has a rubber bushing type component. In my case, one of them was chewed up and prevented the caliper from sliding smoothly. I think this was a contributing factor to the pulsing I had felt.

Also, I got curious about what people are saying regarding brakes with any sort of metallic compounds in them, so I did an inspection. I have about 1000 miles on my pads and rotors. Each of them seems to be wearing well except for the front left. Does anyone know if the grooving is a symptom of the material? It is just enough to barely catch a fingernail.

I'd be willing to get different pads if that would help, but I'm not sure if it would cause issues with bedding in, or if the grooving would smooth out over time.

These are the same materials that I used on the rear brakes, but they are doing fine.

I've always gotten 60k+miles off OEM done by Lexus. I once got 80k out of the rears. But you have to have the job done right and flush brake fluid every 2 years if you live in a humid state.

That looks like it could be a few different things, improper machining of the rotors and now the pads are wearing into the indifference. There could have been a slight drag from debris getting caught in between the materials. Regarding "metallic," it is less forgiving because the materials are so cheap and terrible. "IE, squeals, more heat, wearing quicker, etc"

I am a fan of Akebono pads. They are low dust, and seem to last forever (although I think some will say at the expense of pedal feel). Several parts resources show them as the OE provider for the rear pads originally...at least for my '05 LX.
