Noticed that the DS rear wheel bearings are loose too, and I'm going on another trip to the Ruby mountains (near elko) on tuesday this week. Thinking of building my own tool since it looks simple enough.

The socket method in this thread grabs onto the screw heads instead of prongs that insert into the hub nut ring.

Would that be a good idea to cup the threads with the socket? What are those threads for? I can't see a use for them in the pictures (i havent pulled my hub apart yet)

Or should I stick with the prong type tool instead?

(here's a pic with the threads i'm talking about)

You can use mine if you want. I will be home on Friday night. Also, the tool goes into the holes surrounding those screws. You can borrow the tool and FSM. Just let me know. If you search on 'Mud, someone made the tool and showed pictures on how/what they did.

Thanks Jack. After looking at some up close pictures of the tool, it seems like something that could easily be made. I was thinking of cutting off the threads and using the smooth shank of some grade 8 bolts. I'll see what I can come up with today and I'll let you know. I bought the impact driver this morning at sears, so i should be set.

How do you determine the preload on the rear? I know you have to set it, then rotate the ring until the screw holes line up, but i'm wondering about the initial preload. If that makes sense!

Finished making the tool, it fits like a glove! Cost about $4 in bolts, an old socket, and piece of 3/16 plate.

For pre-load just tighten the outer down until it "feels" right, then check to see if the holes for those screws line up, if not, then adjust until they do. Your bearings/races should really be settled now, so you shouldn't have any issues with setting it up.

Nice job on the tool, looks great.

X2, that tool looks killer.
