1999 UZJ100. 179,000 miles.

Rattle from rear axle area. Only happens when rear axle has movement from speed bumps or rough road surface.

Just replaced all parking brake components. Not coming from exhaust system, just checked 2X.

Ideas?

I have a panhard bar with bushings that are totally shot that rattles. Identified by laying under truck while someone shook the truck. I found whiteline sells replacement bushings for about $35.

Loose/worn UCA/LCA mount/bushings (At 179K your LCA/UCA bushings could be toast)?

Snug spare?

I had a similar rattle on my front axle. Turned out to be a loose axle pin? Not sure what that is, but that's what the mechanic told me. After they fixed it problem solved.

I chased a similar rattle and ended up was the rear brake pad retaining clips. They had gone missing and when I went over a speed bump the pads clanked around in the caliper.

Rattle has been diagnosed as a broken shock.
Installed Bilsteins 2 years ago with OME 865's running 285/75/16's. The right rear shock at the top of the shaft snapped off. So the shaft has been fully extended and the broken end was hitting against the body or chassis of the truck when going over bumps or choppy road.

From doing some mud research, this is a common problem with the Bilsteins. Hope to warranty this one shock and if the replacement also breaks, will change out rear shocks to another brand.

I just had that same problem. It was quite the mess in there...
CORRECTION: similar problem.... mine was the retaining pin for the e-brake shoes...

Quite common I'm told if someone services the brakes and isn't familiar with the setup.

Yuman - I was thinking about you and your anti rattle fetish when you wrote that. It made me crazy.. Can't imagine what it did to you!

AH! you remember that about me! lol. It's even worse now without the E-brake parts in there. at slow speeds if I have the windows down there is a HORRIBLE click-tick-grinding noise.... UGH!! I can't imagine what it is? the bearings are brand new. The guts for the ebrake are removed.... I'm at a loss... I'm putting new everything on the rear brakes as soon as all of the parts arrive so HOPEFULLY it will remedy everything. The rear brake calipers were BEYOND attrocious!!

I think I have a sticky caliper again, which was remedied at the time of the new MC last spring. I'm getting ready to order the jonsey stuff an redo the whole rears too! Wish I lived closer, we could geek out! Maybe in August when we're down in EI.

Sounds like a good time to me!! I got new rear calipers, rotors, pads and ebrake hardware.... If I still have the noise after all of that, I'll be afraid that it's the bearings.... which are only a few months old, so Toyota will spring for that. They're the ones who pressed all of that on the axles...

Spare is mounted on a ARB bumper...... my gut says bearings..... FML!! It only makes noise when the wheels turn while the vehicle is on the ground.... time will tell...

Did you get anywhere with this noise YDR?
