I had a rear axle seal go out and upon pulling the axle which almost wasn’t possible I found that the outer bearing stuck at some point and wore a groove in the axle. I can’t get the other side off right now and was wondering if anyone new how deep the housing is machined out for the bearing. My worry is that with the bearing getting stuck it also wore the housing and possibly made the bearing pocket deeper. The picture that has the tape measure inside is sitting at about 1 5/8” to the outside edge of the housing.

Yikes. Is that a poly performance axle shaft?

Does not look stock to me. They were known to have a bad heat treat on the bearing surface. In any case a new bearing and a stock axle shaft will set this side right. I’d pull the other side too, as it’s likely the same.

Thanks! I was worried the bearing may start to shift side to side if the pocket on the housing had been lengthened. The other side looks good when I had it out but did order new bearings for both sides. Just found a new axle as well.
