Long story short, I ran out of fuel, and my primer pump for bleeding the fuel lines just pumps air. I'm about to change out the primer pump to a Bosch plunger unit and I need to know if there are any tricks to doing this as I'm trying to get this done overnight and I need the truck in the morning.

Can anyone give me a rundown in case I run into trouble in the middle of the night?

Much appreciated,
Matt

Edit: I figured it out, it was very straight forward:

Replacing the pump:
Fixing a failed primer pump involves replacing the primer pump cylinder(part #22501), the copper washer gasket (#22513) and the valve (22515). The Bosch kit does not come with the spring (22515A), so you have to reuse the one on the pump, which is fine. I did not have the proper size wrench to remove the old pump, but seeing as its going to be thrown away, I used vice grips. The threads have been bathed in diesel its whole life so it shouldn't be too hard to remove. Mine wasn't. The Bosch unit requires a 17mm wrench to install. Once that's installed, you must bleed the fuel system.

Bleeding the fuel system after running out of fuel:
Open the hood and find the injector pump. On the stock pump, there's a little white plastic knob just larger than the size of a dollar coin. Twist it until it pops up. Pump the plunger until its hard and then crack the bleeder by the fuel filter just long enough to release pressure. Repeat until deisel spurts out of the bleeder without bubbles (just like doing your brakes). On the Bosch pump, the process is the same, but there's no need to twist the plunger to release it, as it rests in the ready-to-pump position.

Is this the fuel pump that you used for your hj60 Land Cruiser?

It looks like that cheap chinese unit will work.. but I much prefer the genuine Bosch unit.. any good diesel shop can supply this.. or google this part number: "2 447 222 126"
