I posted as a newbie a couple of days ago with questions about doing the clutch in my new 87 fj60. Thanks for the help, I managed to get it done by myself with a floor jack and hand tools. I replaced the rear main seal cos i was in that far anyway.

Being well pleased with myself i started the 6 hour drive to school on sunday evening, for class on monday morning. All was going well until i got about 50 miles out and filled up with gas. Huge puddle of oil under the car!!

I turned around, drove home and tore the truck apart. It was the rear main. I was done by midnight tearing into it. Called Napa in the morning and found another rear main. I did remember the rear main not going in the easily the first time (factoy toyota part) and so i called on my friend the current Lexus and former Toyota tech to help out. We spent hours trying to get the bloody seal to go in right without tearing and eventually ended up RTVing a very small part at the top. Trans back in and ready to go. It leaks again

Why won't my rear main seals fit. I'm on the verge of a breakdown. I need to get to school now and if i can find another seal i will be doing my 3rd rear main in as many days. I cannot afford for it to go bad again.

It almost seems like the seals are too big??? Help me please. Oh yeah, does anyone in the Seattle area have a rear main seal i can buy??

Thanks
Dave

Buy an OEM seal. A rear main is too much trouble to trust to non-OEM. Loosen the couple of bolts on that rearmost crank cradle to give yourself a little more room with pushing in the seal. Don't forget to retorque the bolts.

Thanks. I'll try loosening that cradle. Would i need another oil pan gasket?

I know i had the right part with the first one for sure and that one didn't fit right either. I need to get to school as class started yesterday morning so i'll be using the Napa part as they have it today, i'm ordering another Toyota one for tomorrow.

I know i'm only a noob, but if someone could ask the Landcruiser gods to bless my third effort i would really appreciate it

Dave
