I'm interested in picking up an 80 series but im not entirely sure what realistic numbers look like for these rigs.

Of course I would love to find a triple locked FZJ80 with the 1FZ in perfect condition, but I'm seeing more and more non factory locked higher mileage stock 80s in CA.

What would I be realistically paying for either an FJ80(3FE) or FZJ80(1FZ) without any factory lockers?

I know everyones going to say "Price is what someone is willing to pay for it" but what are some average numbers ya'll are seeing?

Additionally, do you see a big price difference between the 3FE and 1FZ ?

It depends so much on your location. If you can buy an unlocked one cheap enough that adding kickers would be feasible, go for it. Now is the time to buy. They’ve been on an upward trend for a good while, right now, seems like a lot of people are trying to sell stuff cheap.

Yeah I've been keeping an eye on the market for them.

I'm located in northern CA. California prices tend to be a higher than most other states.

Check in the valley up in Oregon. Prices are usually a bit lower there, like Medford, Ashland, Eugene. When I lived in CA I would always buy cars in Oregon.

Good advice there, appreciate it.

The market has dropped a bit, and some are selling their rigs to pay the mortgage. A clean example with under 200k miles can be had for the 8-10k range. An example with factory lockers with under 200k miles can be had for 11-16k depending on condition. I’ve seen some examples with factory lockers and 220-250k miles sell for 11-13k recently and I thought that was a good price considering they were selling for 16-20k just before covid happened.

I bought a pretty darn good example of a two owner locked rig, however I had to go to Arizona. I paid low teens for it and think I did well. Considering the last few locked cruiser with faded paint and ripped up interiors with year of neglected maintenance are selling for 10k here in nor cal.

I was in your boat about six months ago. Had to be patient but jumped on an opportunity and had to have mine shipped halfway across the country and still came out cheaper than the prices I was seeing for rigs being sold in CA. I had an Excel sheet I was maintaining of rigs being sold and I'd say you're looking at $7-10k unlocked (200k+ miles) with condition and extras being your biggest variables. I picked up a FZJ80 for the additional safety features (airbags). FB marketplace of all places was the best in terms of available inventory when I was searching.

Or, just thought about this, look down in the San Diego area for Diesels that were brought back from Japan by Marines/Sailors. Anything 1995 and older is legal now. Might pay a larger price, but you also might score a good deal since they didn't pay all the normal costs of import.

This is what I'm doing, but I'm not selling it ;)

Thats some good info right there. Appreciate it.

If the price difference between an unlocked and factory locked rig is big, then i'll take the ARB route with an unlocked rig.

I would really love a later model like the 95-97 for safety features as well as OBDII support, as i know the earlier models didn't have full OBDII

Those are clocking in at minimum of $20K for an RHD. They’re substantially more expensive in LHD.

If you are willing to fix some stuff and ok with a visually not the greatest condition in terms of paint, it is possible to come by cheaper ones, though rare. By Fixing stuff I mean for example something with a check engine light that doesn't pass smog. I bought mine in Oxnard, 2 years ago with an egr code and ripped seats , no fender flares ,235k miles, triple locked, and arizona title for 5400 with a set of wheels , sold those for 300$.

Yeah, exterior condition i can care less for. I would probably end up rhino lining the exterior anyways and cut up the fenders for tire clearance.

As for big mechanical issues, I'm fairly good with a wrench but last thing i want to deal with is emissions issues.

I know, emission issues can be very annoying, its smart to have a scan tool to look up what is wrong, as a bad O2 sensor that is not switching or an egr valve are not that hard to deal with, especially with the knowledge that's available here on the forums.

Yeah, I would want a newer later year where OBDII is supported to get as much info from a scan tool as possible.

Haha DUDE!

I noticed you lived in Fresno and saw your ride link. Sure as s***, I have a picture of your GX470 on my phone. It was parked across the street at my neighbor Richard's place. Have you been in an FZJ80 yet, and what is your price range, and why did you sell the GX470 ( other than looks )?

Admittedly, the new front bumper helped A CRAP TON in that department. Still that barn door.

From where you came from before in the rig department, there are some serious pluses and minuses to the FZJ80.

No way, you got photos ?! DM me them (here or on instagram @xplore.offroad) Haha I've got tons of pics of the GX. But I did just sell it like 2 weeks ago. Need the cash atm.

Just keeping my eyes open on a good deal thats all.

I forgot to mention that imported diesels have a tough time finding parts here in the states. You have to get them through the overseas suppliers like Partsouq and Amayama.

Yeah I aint gonna be buying a diesel anytime soon.

I've seen 1 RHD diesel for sale recently, and they were asking like 25-30k
