We are trying to do rear brakes. While removing the rear lug nuts to a friends 100, we broke one. It is a special locking nut. The socket and nut both partially broke.

He is about to buy new tires and called the tire stores they said they couldn't get it off either. So....

We tried hammering. A socket on but with the rounded outside edge the socket just spun off. The lug nuts are steal...or at least are magnetic. But not sure I can weld something onto them or what to do? I don't mind breaking the stud as I have a spare but nothing will grip this nut!

Any tips from the mud members?
Thanks in advance!

Dealerships around here have an assortment of lug keys. Looks like there's still enough contact there that if they had that pattern you could get it off. Otherwise, weld a socket on there. Throw it far, far away when you get it off.

Also, root around the tool kit, console, glove box, etc. to see if the PO left the lug key.

We have the lug key...it broke too. I will call around to the dealers. Thanks.

We have hammered a couple sockets on and they just soon off. The lug nut isn't even scratched but the sockets are stripped on the inside. This thing is tough.

This just happened to me a few days ago! Irwin Bolt Grips will save your ass. My wheels had those stupid spline-drive tuner lugs. The lock tool split and I didn't realize it until it was too late and the lug was completely stripped (using impact gun). Tried welding another lug onto it but didn't have enough room since they're recessed. Went to the parts store and picked up a set of the Irwin Bolt Grips. These things grip like a mofo. Lug was out on the first attempt within seconds.

hmm...i've never heard of those Irwin Bolt Grips. they look like a handy item to have around!
I was going to suggest maybe seeing if some Vice Grips have enough room in there to grab the nut.

Air chisel. split it. That looks like a mcgard lock. I had two break on me when i got two flats in my previous car while driving on a road that was having construction performed. I had the lock do the same as yours. Chances are, they were overtorqued previously.

They're a life saver! They have a unique reverse thread. You put your gun or ratchet in reverse and the threads bite and cut into the bolt head, backing it out.

Yeah I think they were over torqued. I have had to replace wheel studs on my 100 a few times before. They are mcgards. They won't be on after tonight. We tried vice grips but there isn't enough to grab with the sloped edge that broke. We borrowed a mcgard socket from the dealer and will try it. Then to plan b of a dremel or welding or something.
Thanks everyone. Keep the suggestions coming if you have them.
