It doesn't seem that CDAN's kit includes inner and outer hub races. If I am re-using wheel bearings, do I not remove the old races at all, and simply clean the inside of the hub with old races intact, and re-pack and replace old bearings?

Could somebody please post the TIMKIN part # for the outer wheel bearing and race? Or, is there an alternate brand I can get at Napa? Part # needed.

If I was at a computer I would do the search myself, but my wife has logged in for me. Thanks!

the races coem with the bearings , if u reuse the bearings then u wont get new races nor would there be any reason to remove them if you are not putting new ones in just clean make sure there good and move on .

I think you're using the wrong term here, New. I'm fairly sure you're referring to the front wheel bearings (not 'hub bearings') and these are not part of a birf kit simply because they're expensive and rarely needed. Even casually maintained wheel bearings will go 250,000 miles on these - they're huge.

Unless you know you need them, I wouldn't buy them unless if you find you need one it's going to be a Sunday and no parts stores around you will be open or something.

I'm sure someone here will have the cross reference bearing number - you can get Timkens at many volume parts stores in stock, or with a couple days notice.

Thanks for the clarifications. I did find the part # for the bearing and race (outer wheel bearing TIMKEN #LM102949, race #LM102910). Mine is chewed up pretty badly so I will need to go out and get a set.

(Still the wife typing)

Bummer on the bearing. And that is unusual. Is is scored black, or actually roughed up?

Were your hub nuts really loose when you broke it down? Grease washed out?

AutoZone and Parts Plus should have them in Timken, which is what you want. They will argue with you about not having Cruiser wheel bearings because their software is wrong, but if you give them the part #s, they can find them. They may need to try each number with a "J" in front of the "LM" though.

Thanks for the tips--will file away for future (hopefully not anytime soon!) ...since I am about 3 hours from the nearest Autozone, the 2 local parts houses didn't have Timken, so I had to settle for BCA/ SKC(?)--bummer. I got new bearings and races for both inner and outer bearings on driver's side.
(I had mistakenly taken out the race for a perfectly good outer bearing so got a new matched set.)

After about 20 hours of work, I finally got it buttoned back together late yesterday afternoon. (I was working solo and am not the fastest wrencher in the land). While in there I also put in new rotors, 100-pads (they fit just perfectly if you leave out the middle shim), and changed the fuel filter--notching the mounting screw hole on the inboard side is the ONLY way to do this without losing your religion.

The bad bearing was actually the inner bearing on DS, and it wasn't discolored, but actually chewed up the surface of 3 of the rollers, and the race had some nasty scars as well. Will try to post a pic of it. The DS was soupy--the source of my contaminated diff fluid.
The passenger's side was fine. Both birfs looked great, no abnormal discoloration, no excessive play, and the bearings looked great, so they didn't get swapped side to side.

Many, many thanks to those who have gone before and shared their experiences on this board--I followed them, plus the DVD, plus the FSM and everything was just as expected--just a lot longer in time. Getting the extra inner oil seal was a HUGE tip, as I did manage to pop out the inside circumferential spring once I installed it, and couldn't get the spring back in, so out comes the brand new seal (damaging it in the process, of course) and in goes the spare. whew--glad I ordered the extra.

Thanks to you guys for real-time assistance, to Jim for answering the phone on a weekend to help a newbie out, to Tim for the loan of the SSTs, and cdan for all the right parts.

Coming soon--rear axle service!

Good Job! You are now in "The Club" :D

Nothing like going in to work on Monday completely exhausted and needing a weekend. ha!
