BTW even new hose can leak... Maybe whomever cut the hose to length accidentally slit it as well...

It appears that the feed and return lines actually are permeating gas. The sniffer goes nuts when run along the line all the way from the feed on the tank to the metal connector under the body. A friend of mine owns a custom gas tank manufacturing company and he has seen this problem. It appears that the newer gas mixtures simply bleed through. When I removed the lines and capped the feed and return the smell disappeared. He has a fuel line solution he is going to try on my vehicle next Tuesday. Have you read @FJ40Jim's 'pressurization test' in post# 81, of this thread?
You may be able to find your leak, using Jim's procedure.
