I mapped the entire charcoal canister venting for you that is color coded, did you read it?

The mechanic is wrong, but check all your fuel hoses. I had a fuel smell recently and I found a small slice in the filler hose (filler neck to tank) the slice was almost imperceptible, but got it stunk like hell of gas in and out of the vehicle.

Was amazed it smelled as bad as it did with such a small slice in the hose.

BH, stumbled upon this thread this morning and immediately recognized this truck, location and initials. Sorry to read that you are still having that problem.

I ditched my carb for OEM a few years ago and am venting my canister (green hose) to the air cleaner. IIRC you can tie the vent hose into the base of the aftermarket air cleaner.

Good luck. Lots of great help here on MUD, Kelly

A friend of mine custom fabricates gas tanks nationwide. He was given a new product made for older vehicles that supposedly solves this problem. He gave me one yesterday and I am going to install it this weekend. We will see. Hope all is well. Just got my cruiser back after a year. They did a phenomenal job restoring it.

Looks great in your Avatar photo, good luck with the tank swap BH

If it's "venting", you'll smell gas in the garage and maybe elsewhere. The OEM evap system is intended to be closed to the atmosphere unless the engine is running and able to burn the fumes. It works very well when it is complete and working.

My '77 has had a hard time venting lately , occasionally hear a buzzing from the vent I assume - now the tank is leaking or something in the cab anyway . Need to figure this out and fix it once and for all....

I may have stumbled upon a solution. Will report back shortly

I replaced all of my lines (venting and fuel) as well as installed a new tank. I bought a gas sniffer to help find where there might be a gas leak. Interestingly, all of my venting lines seem to be snug as the sniffer doesn't sound. However, when I put the sniffer on the fuel line from the bottom of the tank that leads to the fuel pump starting at the nipple of the tank to where it goes through the grommet the sniffer goes crazy. It's almost as if the gas is permeating the fuel line. It is a brand new line. I have a 5/16" fuel line that seems to fit perfect. Any thoughts?

1. New hose ok?
2. Hose clamp tight?
3. Clamp hasn't cut hose?
4. Feed nipple, tank-to-hose not cracked or degraded?
5. Tank not leaking in that area?
6. Fuel return nipple is nearby, is it ok?
7. Fuel return is near fuel feed in tank... Same questions as for fuel feed...

Edit: also check the soft-line-to-hard-line connections, under the floor... Are any leaking?
If you are still using the fuel separator, is it plumbed correctly?
Does your sniffer pick up any fumes under the floor.
Any fumes around the separator?
Just throwing stuff out there... HTH

All lines are new. What is a back amp? What size line is the return and what size is the fuel line under the tank? 5/16 or 1/4

IIRC All 5/16" - my truck is not available for me to check.

The only 1/4" I recall is one of the evaporator connections - seems like some of the evaporator ports are also 3/8"
