I've been noticing this the last 10 days or so, since the weather has turned nasty.
It's a 2-3 second burst like a jack hammer from somewhere under the hood or in the front drive/ brake area. Notice it within 1-2 minutes after I get moving, but only at a stop. Makes no difference how much it has warmed up. I haven't noticed anything else, just wondering about the noise. Thanks

My LC was making a similar sound, mainly on dirt roads. I checked the front bumper, where it meets the quarter panel. I tightened up the one bolt the connects the two and no more rattle. Just thought you might want to rule that out first.

Cheers.

Could it be the brake booster. They make noise but not usually jackhammer loud. They also run an ABS test cycle or similar after the truck reaches a certain speed for the first time on a start.

Are you saying 1-2 mins after you start moving. Warm or cold. Or are you saying at every stop.

This was happening on my '99 and it turned out to be the plastic engine cover was vibrating. I researched and found a thread on this that recomended that I take it off. I did and have not heard the sound since.

I've also heard Charcoal Canisters "chatter" like what you're describing.

Not jackhammer volume, but that type of short burst. Tends to happen once after I start rolling. Usually at the stop light down the street. Usually doesn't happen again the rest of the day. Maybe once later in the morning.

Now that i am thinking about it, seems to be only when I come to a hard/full stop due to traffic at the intersection. Could be the ABS test. I have only noticed it when radio is off, so the volume isn't that loud and vibration isn't noticeable.

"Chatter" is the perfect description. Is it a sign of trouble with the charcoal cannister?

I Will def. check that out. Be great if it was the easy solution. the engine cover, that is.

Exact same thing here. Jackhammer is a perfect description. Mine happens in the same situation. While checking my oil the other day, I accidentally banged the veal out of the engine cover. Same sound. I'm guessing that's it.

Hey,

I have intermittently experienced the same sound with mine. Generally when it is colder, and most often occurring when I stop. What did you figure out with yours?

Bumping this thread as it describes what I've been experiencing the last couple of weeks, but I've noticed the "chatter" / jack-hammer burst of noise intermittently while driving at low speeds or coming to a stop. The other day I noticed that it persisted briefly after I stopped the car and I got out to listen to it - appears to be coming from the drivers side.

How do I diagnose if it's the ABS Self-test?

If it's the charcoal canister how do I resolve?
