Hello All
I am planning on taking a week long trip in the Maze section of Canyonlands N.P. in September. We will be boon docking with no refueling. The total distance is @ 300 miles. I expect there will be some wheeling but mostly driving on two track. I have never traveled that long a distance off road. My question - do you think I can make it without extra fuel? Thoughts?
Thank you in advance!
Peter

Depending if you come down from either Hanksville (I-70) or come up from Ticaboo (if you are coming across the ferry to BullFrog) or Hite Crossing (if you are coming from the Bears Ears area), fill up at either one of those stops. Hite Crossing diesel will be expensive. Hanksville less so. Ticaboo will be reasonable right now.

You should be good. Personally, I'd throw in a 5 gallon jerry can just in case.

You'll have plenty of fuel ..... Don't worry.

The 1HZ uses very little fuel in adverse conditions as long as you are gentle on the throttle and let the low down torque do its work.
I think you will make it easily, probably with a 1/4 of a tank to spare.
But nothing like having 20 litres back up.
Make sure you fill the tank to the brim, you should get 85 litres in there or whatever that is in US gallons.

I did 500klm easily on dirt roads at 80kph in central australia.
My biggest worry was tyres, I had 2 spares and used them both.

Thank you everyone for your input (except Charles). I'll plan on taking an extra 5 gallons with me as a precaution.
Onur - I am impressed with your knowledge of the area. I checked the itinerary and we'll be leaving the Hans Flat Ranger station toward Flint Seep, then to the Doll house and then on to other points of interest.
Should be good trip. Anyone have an idea on how hot it might be?
Thanks again!
Peter

I too was suggesting additional fuel however I simply chose to do it in a more colorful way.

I have spent a lot of time in that quadrant of Southern Utah and know very specifically the exact trip you are going to be doing.

My recommendation is to definitely come down from Hanksville. Diesel is plentiful and you can stop at Blondie's for a great burger. Do your resupply there as well.

The ferry crossing between Halls Crossing and Bullfrog is currently down. So coming up from Ticaboo is not an option currently. It might be open when you are there in September. You will need to check with the Lake Powell folks to see.

Temps can vary anywhere from very cold to very hot. It's high desert so cold nights and hot, dry days. The monsoons will be over so precipitation will be minimal.
