According to my Haynes Manual, HJ60 Radiators (maybe others too, dunno) came with a shutter mechanism to be used in cold weather to help warm up the engine faster. I don't rmember seeing anything like this on mine but I wasn't exactly looking for it either. Sounds like a cool feature.

Do they exist? Was it an option? For those who have made use of it, does it work well?

I'd look again myself by my cruiser is 1000 miles away :'( Just curious, thanks

My 81 BJ-42 has the shutter (not Shudder - thats when your wheel is terribly bent!!!). Up here in the great white north, your heater/defrost won't be able to keep ice from forming on the inside of your windows at -35C. Simply roll down the shutter and smile as the ice disapears.

As far as I know all the diesel 'Cruisers up here came with them. My '82 had it until I had to remove it to get the A/C condensor and piping in.

I'll probably install the shutter in the '76 FJ55 once the diesel conversion is done.

I have 2- one from the '81, one from the '82 BJ42 (both Canadian, '81 is cold-spec with the in-cab seperate glow switch with non-superglow system). Couldn't imagine ever using them and they were rusting up so I removed 'em. If it were an issue, nothing that a piece of cardboard couldn't handle in a pinch. Will look for pics or take some if I get a chance. Would be fairly easy to make if you could find a small roller blind- that's pretty much what they are.

EDIT: I drove the '82 cross country (northern route, USA) in the middle of winter one year and it never needed the shade even at temps of 15-20F. Minor compared to what you see in Canada, but just to give an idea...

Not much of a shutter...just a piece of roll up canvas. Worked well for my BJ

When I saw shutter in the manual I got all excited because I thought it was like my old McCormick W6 which actually had a setup like vertical blinds. But when all I saw was that silly rollup thing, thought it was pretty cheap

I'll agree, my old '78 Corolla SR5 had a true shutter over the rad (it was OEM as dad bought the car new in October '77). Had about a dozen blades and a nice spring loaded handle to flip it open or closed. It helped warm the car up on cold days.

an old boss of mine had a volvo with a roll-down shutter/screen that would do that.

pretty cool stuff, had a little crank for it on the dash.
