There's a wrecked 04 Tacoma for sale near me with the R151f 5 speed manual. Is there any possibility of putting this in a 97 FZJ80, maybe with a custom bell housing?

yes, but don't.

hzj105 used the r151f gear box behind 1HZ. I think, but not certain, the bellhousings are the same
EDIT : Bellhousings don't share the same part number, so i guess not the same

it's a light duty box in comparison to H151f that was used in 80 series, and turbo diesel 100 & 7# series.

put the two boxes side by side, and the r151f looks puny. it was used in hilux/tacoma without much issue.
they are a known weakness in 105series cruisers.
5th gear failures are must common.

I sourced h151f box to swap out the r151f in my 105 series. (never happened) because I was worried the harder wheeling I like to do was pushing the friendship with the r151f

gearbox swaps are quite common in HZJ105 in Aus. and there's aftermarket upgrades available to work around the 5th gear failure in r151f's

H55F is another 5 speed landcruiser box that may be more readily available in USA.
there's bellhousings that work for the fzfe too.

H55F was superceded by H150F & H151F.
My preference would be H151F. they are a stronger box, and designed as a 5 speed from the ground up.
H55F is s modified 4 speed box, and has its own inherent weaknesses.

I'm sure a search here would find details of H55F swap

Yea I found this bellhousing for an H55f to 1fz, but this seems more for 1fz swaps into older LCs. There's a thread on here where someone suggested swapping an H55f into an FZJ80 and people said it was kind of a non starter to swap in the antique 5 speed. Personally I'd even take the 4 speep out of an FJ60.

Import a H150F/H151F and associated bits from Australia! That's what I did. Found mine on Gumtree.au and was lucky enough that the seller was willing to strap it all to a pallet. Shipping was an expensive headache, pm for details on that.

Still had it landed and installed in the truck with new OEM wear parts and hardware, LHD specific shift boots etc for little more than 1/3 the cost of what one vendor who is selling conversion kits charges for them.

Dang! I don't even want to ask what the shipping from Aus cost on that collection of iron!!

From rural NSW to Halifax NS it cost $1605 CAD for shipping! More than the parts themselves.

The kicker was that from Sydney, across the pacific to Vancouver, then 3/4 the way across Canada to Montreal was $505. Then Montreal to Halifax was $800.
