Well since only one of my brethren posted up to help install the H55 last week. I decided not to do it. i don't have the time to doo the whole thing solo. A local Tranny shop quoted me $400 to install the tranny and new clutch. How does that sound?

Mitch

If that includes removing and reinstalling the t-case, it's a screaming deal. I'll bet they have no idea what is involved with the t-case. You'll also want tro replace the clutch and the t-case seal that keeps oil from being pumped into the tranny.

I'm thinking that they are clueless on the T case ordeal. My tranny shop charged me around $250 just to install the TC on the H55F. But if that's the case, I'd do it right away before they change their mind. Good luck.

I told him it was a 4x4

I asked him if I could help and he said sure as long as he wasn't toooooo busy, so I will be there to make sure its done right.

You better find out their per hour rate. just a clutch replacement, (TO, main seal, and the rest of the stuff you do with a clutch job) is in all the "labor books" as a 8 hour job. (just had my clutch done, I supplied the parts. $600 labor only. Add the oil pan gasket labor and it was $200 more.

$400 would be killer but at $70.00/hr that's 6 hours, dunno if that can be done. particulairly if this shop has not done a Cruiser before...

same shop changed my 4X4 powerstroke clutch for $300. They are used to heavy duty stuff.

That's a heck of a deal. Print off the tech notes on H55F install, take that and your parts in and get the work done.

$400 is definately an exellent deal, if it's done correctly. I personally wouldn't do the job for twice that amount, know the work that's involved. If they don't plug the hole in the T-case, or install the oiler cup, then it'll cause more problems than the dollars you're saving, so you definately need to make sure they know what they're doing. The bell housing may need slight clearance/fitting also, at the 2 o'clock position, if it's not a 3f housing. If the cleanance isn't there, they'll never be able to fit it flush, and they'll be scratching their heads wondering why.

What is this speaking about you are?

I think I might tear into it tonight after the kids go to bed. Driveshafts off fo sure possibly more.

If that's the price they quoted, they'll have to stand by it and it's a good deal.

Years ago I drove by a shop that had a clutch special painted on it's window. I asked about it, made sure it was a "flat rate", and had it done for just over 3 bills.

That was the last time they would offer that price for any land cruiser. ;)

I wouldnt trust that shop; sounds like they dont know what there doing. You dont want them to get hurt on the $$. Otherwise, they will cut corners and you both lose.

if you stand and watch them to insure it's done right, you better get all over it. That's is a great deal if they are competent.

.I don't think they have to stick by any qouted price unless they have some guarantee which few shops have for a big job like that..too many variebles if they guarantee that price, they are already nuts and will short cut to make it stay in "estimate".
