Want to remove the roof rack to add a custom box to the top of the Cruiser. It was made for a 60, so it doesn't have clearance over the stock rack, so it needs to be done with.

I don't plan to sell or re-use the stocker, so all damage done to it doesn't matter. I would, though, like to keep my roof in no worse condition than it is, and not have to go in through the roofliner. I plan to Line-X where need be and never get back in the mounting holes ever again. Any quick tips or pictures?

All search results were about keeping them intact or repairing, none for just removal (atleast that I found, those hidden ones that don't come up in searches might have my answers though).

I did pretty much what Tyler did, only in six inch by four inch patches around the mount points, and I hand painted Herculiner.

I'd like to see a close up picture of the herculiner on the roof of your 80. How did it turn out? Does it the herculiner stick as well as the Line-X or other professionally-applied liner?

Search for this topic by moi...another easy fix for the holes your are left with. As far as removal? Ummmm just unscrew the screws...;) :D

In regards to removal... since you're not re-using the factory rack, and are going to be covering the holes, then this shouldn't be a big deal for you. Of course removing the rack is simple, if you're nutserts haven't rusted and don't begin to spin on you. But even if they do, you can just drill the heads off to get the rack off. Now, what I don't know is if having the nutserts bouncing around in the head liner would cause a racket, and irritate you to the point of having to remove the headliner to get them out.

I used a tensy bit of PB Blaster on the screws, and backed them out slowly... SLOWLY!

I think someone here did a quick removal of their roof rack with the help of a low garage. Do a search if you are looking for this sort of method. :D

Is there no way to remove the nutserts without going through the headliner or making a mess of the roof?

Plasma? Why worry about taking them out?

If they made a racket, I wouldn't want them in there. But I guess that is one of those things I should worry about when I get there, maybe things wont be problematic and it will be as easy as a screwdriver.

I am worried about the samething...I guess this is on my list of things to do for next week.
