Quick question on business trip coming up tomorrow for 1 1/2 days to Hoover from Charlotte. On the fence which vehicle to take, 365 miles each way, stopping to see niece in college on the way. Wondering what would you do if given these choices? Will be raining most of the trip,

VW GTI Wolfsburg, all the latest German electronics and 5.3 inch screen, very quick and responsive wth 280 HP, easy to pilot and maneuver, parks anywhere. Fits like a glove, easy to run 75mph and return 32 mpg. Conti contact sports tires glue to the road

OR

My 97 LC, many of you have seen it. Sit higher in traffic, no speeding, but comfortable as a sofa, a everything works great( new rear pads this weekend), navigate with iPad makes it very easy, hands free phone for calls. Probably won't hit more than 65 mph. Easy does it driving.

that's not something anyone but you can answer. Do you care about paying the difference in mpg??? If so take the VW if not move to question 2.

which I more comfortable for you to drive on ling trips. If the VW drive it. If the toy drive it.

those are the only two questions that matter, unless there is something wrong with either.

Not sure if you have any empirical data to draw from... What would you estimate the probability to be for carrying clients/students/furniture for your niece? If something goes wrong, you're a long way from home sir, what is the probability that you can do a field repair on German engineering?

I am leaning LC, just for fun, " to test long distance travel and comfort" or such bullsheet.

No clients in either car, but will have a suit on Monday. The GTI is stil under warranty, so anything goes wrong there it's a 800 call to roadside assistance. It's easier to use the LC as mobile office too, the GTI is a blast, but tighter.

Both are fun to drive, the LC could be better during the insanity portion of the drive, also known as Atlanta. I have been hit 3 times in Atlanta stop and go nutty traffic, every time in a VW. Let them crazies hit the LC this time.....

Vdubb, no question. Those are sweet rides.
When I'm traveling I like to be able to maneuver away from certain drivers/situations on the highway. That's harder to do in an 80.

I'm probably the wrong guy to ask because I basically "zone out" on the highway. No accidents though, so maybe my "zoning out" is better than other folks being alert? Probably doesn't apply to you, Izzy, because you're a pretty intense guy 24/7 :-) If fuel still isn't a factor, since you're being reimbursed, I'd still lean towards the comfort of the TLC. If the clients see it, they might be impressed, and it could be an ice breaker (if you don't know them very well). Erik DD's his FJ40 for that reason when he goes to client sites. Can't go wrong either way, honestly... Your vehicle is super clean, so I doubt you'll have any issues on the highway.

Oh man Jeremy, before seeing this I was thinking "sensible choice, GTI, zip through the traffic, easy to pass the drunks and dangerous drivers". Problem is, I am not sensible. Gas is irrelevant for this trip, if you see the tailgate of my 80 it has the company name, so it's a company truck. Clients won't see it, client is BCBS of Alabama, huge corporate campus with large car lot. I have 2 consultant there on long term projects, so just doing the routine visit and review.

GTI does have the magnaflow catback, brembo brakes (brakes on a dime vs braking on a mile like the 80) APR intake so when you hit the throttle sounds like "it's eating a baby seal".... But I drive it everyday anyway, like a slot car. Also, the drive should be heavy rains, so will drive slower anyway.

Thanks all for your thoughts on this mindless post. I know this is a boohoo problem to have.

More importantly... When's the next trip to Big Creek!? I have at least 3 people who will sign up.
Just about every weekend right now. I know the next 3 Saturdays for sure. Unless you want to just wheel with other cruisers.

Awesome! I'm guess these are groups renting the trails since Scott isn't advertising them.
Just contact him directly or I even can for you. Just let me know. Only Saturday I know is not good for this next month is the 27th as we have a class that day but I think we are trying to be able to run a couple things each weekend.

Great, Darin. Thanks for the info.

I hope the Hi-lift class is still in the works!

GTI all the way. MPGs baby.

Then again, if it's a work trip, then are they going to reimburse fuel? If they are, then Land Cruiser.

Well, Cruiser won. Easy diving, kind of nice to see the world from the slow lane. Glad I did too, weather was torrential thunderstorms and google maps rerouted me through Atlanta where most streets where flooded and intersections had no power. Would have been floating in the GTI. Driving back from Tuscaloosa to Hoover last night on I-20 was the same heavy storms, so clicked on the CDL and drove through puddles like they weren't even there.... Them Herucles MT tires did awesome in the rain too
