Quick Move, or Drive around the block a few times?

Just adding to the discussion...I hadn't driven my 200 for a little over a week and when I started it today to back it out of the garage to reorganize a few things, the engine made the worst clatter for about 2 seconds. First time for me to hear this and I'm guessing it was the valve train rattling because the oil "drained" from up top for sitting that long?? It worried me so much that I did drive it around the block for a few minutes to "knock the cobwebs off" instead of just starting it and shutting it down.

I only bring this up because like I said, this is the first time I've heard this sound and the 200 has sat in the garage many times for longer than a week. The only difference I can think of that makes this time different is that the last time I did "drive it"...yep, I had only backed it out of the garage and turned it off instead of letting it run for a few minutes at least. So not sure if it's all in my head but I now make it a habit to at least drive around the block instead of starting/stopping (e.g. pulling out of the garage).

And I finally get to use this...YMMV

Timing chain tensioner are a known issue on these engines. I had a cold start rattle for a while after an oil change that eventually went away, other people have had to get the tensioners replaced.

My gut is that you just got unlucky with timing on this, even if it seems very coincidental. Our tensioners shouldn’t need oil pressure for initial tension to avoid rattle. Otherwise they would do this on first start after every oil change.

The bad news is this may be a very early sign of tensioner issues. However many people report it happening once then never again.

Mine has routinely been sitting for days with only getting started and backed 20 feet into a new spot in the driveway. No rattle issue, even with my prior history of it.

Very interesting...thanks for the info, something to keep an eye on!

The other issue to consider is that at start up and while warming up, there is a build up of nasty combustion by products and fuel in the oil. Some of these are organic acids. When you don’t get up to temp and “burn them off“, this may end up causing damage, especially to seals.

Have you tried 5-30 or 0-30 motor oil? That might help.

No more problems running the 5-20 synthetic. And I just changed the oil recently too. Will be heading to the mountains soon for cooler temps where it has done it a little more frequently in the past.. but for now this oil is keeping the problem at bay.

I suspect short starts and stops will set the airpump system up for an earlier failure. It may be time to add a Hewitt kit to the shelf when it inevitability fails.

+1 for an onboard trickle charger. I only needed a single bank.

Did you permanently affix to your fuse box or use some double sided tape? Where do you store the cable while running around so that it doesn't drop in by the belts? Probably dumb questions but I haven't installed one of these before and don't want to mess something up.

I don’t run this setup anymore but used double sided Velcro.

Thanks. What are you running now out of curiosity.
