I ran one for years on my cruisers...never had an issue. they kind of lock down in place, so you can't just bump them open. that's not to say that if you don't really get close to the pan, it can't open....cause it can.

I have one that was on my '89 Dodge Cummins if someone want's it!

Topic, indirectly, was other ways to get oil out of the pan. Never said anything about oil from the filter. I don't know of any engine where draining the pan will also drain the filter.

I think the intent was to say that it still is gonna get messy when you drop the filter (s).

Hey... the filter on my HDJ81 sits near the top of the motor with the threads facing down at about a 45 degree angle.... I have yet to not smell burnt oil for 2 or 3 days after a change!

Hmmm... What kind of filter are you using? OEM filters don't drip much when you remove them...

Given the drain plug's position (at least on mine) I would think you'd have to be really unlucky to have it ripped off while wheeling.

The drain on my BJ60 is up high enough behind the axle that I highly doubt it could get damaged. You'd have to be doing some serious rock crawling to get near it.

I think the valve has a good idea to help keep it cleaner. I don't find the plug difficult myself, but if you had it in a bad spot under a skidplate I think the nipple one sounds perfect.

On my 3b the oil filter is vertical with the threads up, almost the perfect set up. Not even a need for a wrench to take it off.

Doesn't the oil all drain down your arm or all over the front drive shaft when you pull the filter? On my 3B's the filter is almost vertical but there is enough oil above it to make a nice mess when removing it.

The 1HZ does this. I get a long piece of rag and wind it around the the base of the filter mount like a scarf. When I remove the filter ,the"scarf" soaks it up(most of it)
