I recently bought a JDM 1992 FJ80 Cruiser with 120,000 miles currently. The funny thing is that it has the 1FZ-FE engine, which doesn’t make sense since they only got them starting the next year in ‘93. (Should I call it a FZJ80 now instead?) it’s been difficult to know what year of vehicle parts to look at because of this. I’m very new to this forum and working on cars in general (especially foreign) so I’m looking for advice on things/preemptive maintenance that I should do as a new owner.

Here are some of the details/maintenance of the vehicle done by Torfab Land Cruisers in Everett Washington.

Knuckles rebuilt (2018, 2021)
New Brake Calipers (2018)
New radiator (2018)
New engine computer (2021)
Head gasket rebuilt (2022)
Transmission serviced and solenoids fully replaced (2024)
New brake master cylinder (2024)
Pesky Heater Hose
Alternator (2024)

I’m very excited to be apart of this community as I’ve wanted a Land Cruiser for a very long time. I plan to move to Utah in a month or so, so having confidence in the vehicle during the middle of the winter with all my stuff loaded in the back is a big deal for me. I really appreciate any help and I can answer any questions. Thanks.

Do you know what the build date is on your truck? It’s possible that yours was a late 92 and they were making the transition to the 93 model year so it got the new engine. The engine could have been replaced at some point as well. You might check with torfab to see if they have any info on it if they imported it.

Lots of fishy things there.

It's a RHD.
It has all the plastic equipment from a 96-97 LX 450.
Headlights and turn signals are all aftermarket.
Can't tell what the grille is, but it's not a 92 version.
It has a FF rear axle.

What's the build date on the VIN plate?

What's the VIN?
There are other numbers on the VIN plate that identify the F/R axles. What are those numbers?

Any under hood pics?

The original owner or at least a owner of it (not sure how many owners it had in Japan before coming here) rebadged it as a Lx450 (or atleast the story goes) but the only evidence that it is really is a Toyota Land Cruiser is the VIN (FZJ800016726) , a Toyota locking mechanism on the back hatch andLand Cruiser name on the steering wheel.

It appears that the Trans/Axle # is A442F K295

The date that Car VX gives me when I run the vin is 10/1992 so I’m guessing October.

So, technically, it is a 1993, so a 1FZ-FE makes sense.

The FZJ started in 8/92 and yours is definitely after that. In all model years, the next years model starts in August of the previous year. I have a 96 that has a build date of 8/95.

The 1993 was an OBD1, typically an A442 transmission, and a FF rear axle, so that is consistent with what you have.

You can find FSM (Factory Service Manual) in the "Resources" section above.

You would be best to follow the FSM of 1993 and 1994 for the best information for your truck.

Ok thank you so much. I will now be searching for information for a ‘93 Toyota fzj80. Because of it being a JDM, the service manual will still be accurate? Or at-least accurate enough you think?

Should be accurate enough. The RHD will affect a few things, but the other stuff should be straightforward.
