I hope to be able to hit the 404 market eventually as well, but for now, I will have to stick to the 303's. The hummer wheels are 16.5 in wheels, what tires are you running? Also, are hummer wheels dot approved? I thought they were all bead locks.

Hummers are 16.5" rims and are DOT approved....reubie has 42" Swampers mounted on them. Yes, they are beadlocks, internal-type....believe he ditched the runflats and uses a poly-tube insert for it tho.

I'm running 44's on my H1 rims with the mag runflat/beadlocks.

Just to help keep everyone modivated. Stole these off pirate. It's a D110 with 42" iroks. And that is a regular five gallon bucket sitting under the diff.

Which is one of 16 major areas where all Rover owners should keep a 5-gallon bucket at all times. There are an additional 83 suggested areas for 1-gallon buckets and 231 places where a pint jar should be placed. Drip-drop, drip-drop.... :ban:

cmmon Todd....you know i know that we all know cruisers tend to be a bit leaky too....not as bad, but still. Let's be nice!

Not a matter of being nice or not. Just seizing the opportunity to give someone a hard time. Seldom let that pass by. :)

yep woody has it all correct, except the fact I haven't gotten the poly beadlocks yet. Hummer rims are perfect for portal applications to help protect the gearbox. The 16.5" fact is negated having the beadlock insert locking both beads.

Nice picture, thats what I love about portal axles. The hummer wheels are perfect for the application. Are these hummer wheels being used, used military wheels?

yeah, mine are used military humvee rims I got off an e-bay auction. You can also find used cilvilian ones, be sure to get the correct ones as there were several styles of civilians one and not all use the same beadlocks and some have no beadlocks. Military have 8 bolts holding the rims together, civilians are 12 bolts holding them together.

There is also brand new aluminum ones being sold for replacements. They are a 17" rim and are sweet units with an internal beadlock but are big $$ compaired to the used steel stuff.

I have seen the aluminum ones, and man they are nice, but for $600 they are way out of my price range. The steel military ones are what I like. Have you seen them at the local army surplus stores?

Though I understand the concept behind a portal box, I dont understand all of the detailed inner workings.. How hard would it be to take a built 60 or 9", high pinion, shaved housing, etc and add somekind of portal box on the end to a narrowed axle housing. There are so many aftermarket axle parts now and someone mentioned using D60 outers or a HD birfield (which i think is almost as stroing as a D60) but the ends, whatever they are, would only be taking about half of their normal stress and load, so they should stand up to a lot more abuse, right?? Am i missing something??
