Just went through my '88 22Re and replaced the head gasket and timing chain. Bought my timing kit from engnblder. Everything went real smooth and I'm happy with my work. I put the timing gear on the crank, keyway in the 12 o'clock position, timing dot in the 6 o'clock. on the camshaft, the cam pin was in the 12o'clock and the timing dot was just slightly to the passenger side. lined up the shiny chain links on the dots, put everything back together, stabbed the distributer and lined it's bolt up right back where it was.
Now, everything runs great, and the truck fired right up, but checking the timing the mark on the crank is about 2 inches advanced away from TDC. It would be about 45-50 degrees I'm guessing. If I move it to 5 degrees BTDC the engine just about dies. I shorted out the T and E1 terminals and that didn't do anything to cancel the timing advance. Did give me a 5-1 code for my oxygen sensor though. When I rev the engine from idle, the timing goes back to about 7 degrees advance. Is there another way to kill the advance and check the timing? Am I missing something here?
Also, do all 22re's almost shut down when you pull the oil dipstick? Or especially the large hose on the valve cover? (not PCV, the big front hose) always thought that was wierd.

Good luck!
Idles like a champ now, with no miss, smooth as glass. I can only figure the miss is gone because the timing came way down at idle.
