I just picked up a 1998 and am doing the Timing belt. I have the 1998 FSM and it states to rotate the engine 50 degrees clockwise after you get it to TDC so crank mark is in line with idler bearing. Then remove tensioner and belt. I did this and my cams moved a little bit maybe the left cam 30 degrees.

I have since looked at numerous DIY video and threads and no one is doing this. I should have set at TDC then removed. I found a DIY that said to move 50 the back to TDC but FSM doesn't say that.

Question---any chance I did any damage to valves?

Thanks
Vince

It's not an interference engine so no harm/no foul. FWIW I did it at TDC. Biggest thing is just to get the marks lined up perfect on reinstall.

Is this really true? Does it matter if it's the VVTi version?

I was always under the impression that non-interference engines were a pretty rare thing anymore. Certainly makes me a lot less worried about wiping out my motor if the timing belt was to ever let go unexpectedly! :)

Just as with everything here... tire sizes, positive rake, best brand of shocks... everything gets debated (not pointing this at your comment, just the nature of the group). I don't believe I've read anything from Toyota proper that states it is non-interference, however there have been users with broken belts sans damage. And I believe at one point someone else spun the crank by hand when the belt was off with no contact. Use your own judgment, but from all indications it's a non-interference tractor engine.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll report back if anything does go wrong.
