I'm about to order an LRA tank and was curious about the fueling process.

When fueling is the nozzle placed in the middle and wait for the gas pump to stop?

Or fill the right side ... wait for the pump to stop then proceed with the left?

(Hopefully a black Friday sale and then I'll order).

You fill either side first then proceed to fill other side, so you are filling each tank individually but it doesn't matter what one gets filled first. There is are two distinct locations to insert the nozzle.

ahh makes sense - thanks!

This isn’t really relevant to the original question but as a general practice I only keep about 1 tanks worth of gas or less between the tanks unless I am on a trip and want the extended range. I do that to help not continually overload the evap system. When I fill, I fill the aux tank and then transfer gas to the main tank when I’m below 1/4 tank. This makes sure that I always have fresh gas in the tanks and exercises the transfer pump.

Under-fill each tank by ~2 gallons when topping off. If you have larger diameter tires than stock, calculate MPG by hand under various conditions and then go by mileage driven to get to range. (e.g.: I take ODO miles / MPG to get to gallons used, then take ODO miles x 1.07 to get to actual miles, divide actual miles by gallons used for real MPG) If your fuel pump has been replaced, know that your fuel gauge (guessometer) is probably off. Test out exactly how many miles you can go after fuel light comes on, calculate how much that is, and then fill accordingly. (e.g.: my fuel light comes on when I have six gallons remaining--four reserve, two main--so I'll add 16/17 gallons for a full main tank. Reclassify the Charcoal Canister as consumable, then buy cheap Camry/Prius ones to replace the original one when/if it gets fouled. LRA drains fully only when vehicle is pointed downhill on passenger side; pump will clatter more loudly when tank is empty.

You will love the aux tank upgrade.
Begin practicing the smile and wave that you will share to the driver behind you at the gas pump. That guy who is always in a huge hurry loves nothing more than seeing your pump cut off and then you remove the nozzle and stick it in the aux filler neck.

plus, around here, many pumps have a $100 cut off so you get to put the pump handle back and run the CC again. That gets a glare, then I check my oil, and wash the windshield...

What’s the Camry/prius CC part number?

You sure it’s not going to generate a code if the part is substituted?

The glare! So true… it’s like seeing a skinny kid eat an entire cake, we all stare and wonder where is all that going?!?

I bought this in Aug 2023 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004J9A5IA. Has been running like a champ, code free. (It may have been slightly less expensive when I bought it; not sure)
Thanks for this. Using the link and assuming the reviewer is correct, this is part number 77740-02130 OR 77740-02131. The …30 part looks to be what Amazon is selling while the …31 is what is OEM. That’s my read anyways.

Yeah, I think I had that same question. After I read that same review, and looking over the pin-out/hose fittings, I just went for it. It worked for my 2008.

I just fill the upper or lower hole and then the other one till the nozzle cuts off.
I always drive both tanks till empty/ when main tank is nearly empty I pump everything from the LRA tank and till the red light goes off and then till the main one is empty.

Has anyone relocated their charcoal cannister? I think the main cost - at lest in my case - was not the cannister, but rather dropping the tank to replace it. It would be great to move it to a position not requiring the extra labor......

This would be awesome if possible. I think there's a wire harness that might prove difficult in relocating however. Plumbing too...

Order placed! I chose the 40. Can't wait to get this installed.

For anyone waiting for Black Friday - the discounts became available a few days ago.

Unfortunately - shipping estimate is April 2025

I can only imagine the looks when it's 4 cars deep at the costco gas line. I at least only have a 12.5gal and not the 40g LMAO.

After many months of patiently waiting- finally installed! So far it’s working great! No codes.
No problems with fueling. Full squeeze at the gas pump. No premature clicking off. No squeaks.

I ordered early Nov 2024. 40 gal LRA. Was worth the wait because I got a Black Friday discount and the retail prices on these has gone up recently. ($2745! Currently)

Few things I learned along the way. The pump is not nearly as loud as I had anticipated.
Also- Always knew the 12.5 allowed you to keep the spare. I didn’t realize they actually weld a hollow port through the tank for the spare tire release tool for access. Very cool

The install on the 24/40 is just very slightly less involved than the 12.5. The fit is extra tight on the 12.5. And of course you have to re install the tire carrier.

From what I understand the fit on the 24/40 tanks is not as tight - less chance of body / frame rubbing.

As many have said before- highly recommend!!

Nice work! If you ever want a skid for it, reach out to Budbuilt. I've got a 40 too and she hangs low, but has quite the protection now. It's legit kit!
