My friend is looking to get a '10 or '11 Tacoma fleet type truck 4cyl, no power windows, all white, etc, 4x4.

He will usually just drive the truck a few miles to work, but will be making trips to the beach fioshing, hence the 4x4.

Manual or Auto Transmission?

Any other tips?

Andrew

I've heard the autos make it a bit of a dog. I'm very happy with my manual transmission. It drives very well on and off road and is giving me great mileage.

I highly recommend using a K&N air filter. I just put one in mine and it really fills out the low RPM torque, and I'm estimating about a 15% increase in mileage. I'll know next time I fill up.

my buddy found the truck he's gonna get.
manual, 4cyl, 4x4.

it has a switch to disable the clutch start feature. under what circumstances would you need to start the truck where you wouldn't want to engage the clutch? remote start maybe?

I'm kinda new at climbing and such, and I drive an Auto.. so if you stall out in Lo, in 1st, you would want your feet for gas and brake, and the starter is strong enough in Lo to get the motor running?

Yep, that's one of the purposes for that switch.

Groovy, I see it has a side curtain airbag disable switch as well. I guess those things tend to go off when not wanted while offroading..

Seems to be a nice truck (just like his old one, but 4x4, minus some of the nicer interior.)
Funny, they are claiming 163hp(i think) from that 4cyl. my '91 FJ80 claims 155..

I think I'll get video of the tug off. (that just doesn't sound right)...

Saftey laws say that passenger-side airbags must be disable-able for physically at-risk passengers, like pregnant women, young children, and the elderly. I've never heard of airbags deploying themselves unless the truck's in a situation where they would deploy, like a head, or side-on impact. I don't even think a quick roll onto the roof would trigger them.

Tell your buddy: good choice with the manual! 4 cylinder gasser engines and autos are a match made in the slow lane!

He's talking about roll-sensing curtain airbags, which are designed to deploy in the event of a rollover. They also may deploy in off-roading conditions, hence the shutoff switch.

There was thread recently about a Hummer being pulled out of a lake, and you could see where the curtain airbags had deployed when it was going down. FWIW :meh:
