I know I've seen it said they made them in 1960 but have never seen any concrete proof. Lots of FJ25 that with a VIN that starts with a 0. Enough FJ40 that start with 1 but with a 0. If you look in the who has the oldest FJ40 thread and someone claimed to have seen one that was in the 8000 range which is at least a thousan earlier than any other which may be made in 1960. But unless there is more proof than I saw one not sure I believe it. Everything seems to point that Toyota started the VIN at 10001.I have 10202. Two others that were older and being parted have shown up. Both of those were within twenty of mine and still over the 10001 mark and VIN started with 1.

So LITP,,,,,,,,,Do you think the literature that is out there stating that the FJ40 was around in 1960, in reality, just means that Toyota began working on the FJ40 concept, maybe even finished the FJ40 concept and perhaps a few " demo " cruisers for themselves, test cruisers in 1960 but never released one until 1961? Also, do you happen to know if Vin # 10001 was actually released in 1961? I know you say Toyota started with #1 but couldn't that have been released in LATE 1960? Anyone have actual release months of the FJ40. Seems strange that they would release them exactly on January 1st 1961. Anyway, Thanks for the info. I have never seen any proof either that an FJ40 was around in 1960 but I have seen literature that appears to have come from Toyota that says 1960 was the beginning of the FJ40. Release of them in 1960? So far, no proof.

i recall having read somewhere that 40 production began in september 1960, but i have a somewhat extensive vin list of rigs on my computer and everything that begins with a 0 is an fj25. 1 is fj40

Is the assumption then that Toyota did NOT release an FJ40 with a 1 in front on the Vin before January 1961? I guess not if Nuclear saw somewhere that production began in September 1960. That would be pretty fast: build and ship to dealer before December 1960. Hmm, interesting.

I remember one being for sale I saw on the internet 6 or 7 years ago, described as shipped to the US as a dealer display model or demo or something like that, but was listed as a 1960. Doing a google search indicates 1960 started the fj40 but pictures are always an fj25

here is one example
http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2005/12/23/188916.html
The caption says a 1960 fj40 waiting on the docks to be shipped, but it is not an fj40 in pic.

Can't remember the reference but, seems like a read where 1960 was the first year but 1961 was the first year for the US. Not sure...
