Going to go deer scouting soon and was wondering if anybody has been over these roads? There are a few roads south of the superstition wilderness area. Someone on a hunting forum mentioned there being a few washouts. This is what he said.

"I was up there last year. The road that goes from queen valley and loops around to th oak flats area was the one washed out so bad. I could not even try it on my quad. IT may be fixed now. If not it will be a long back up job up or down a very steep winding skinny road. All the roads are very skinny and you have very little room to try and pass on coming trucks. The shorter the wheel base the better you will be. SOme of the switch back requir you to start making the turn then back up to the edge and go forward again to make the turns. Good luck and be very carful and you should be fine. "

We would like to get as close to the wilderness area as possible. Some of the road numbers are 172, 650, and 342.

Anybody been out there?

Thanks

Sean

The Montana Mountain Loop is easy and very scenic. From the east side of the loop you can take the road over to Oak Flat. It used to be pretty easy too though I have heard of some pretty big washouts. Not sure the status.

Rd 650 is the Montana Mtn loop. I haven't been through there lately, but it's usually an easy drive.

Rd 342 is the road that has been posted as severely washed out on several forums. I went to check it out a couple of months ago and it had been repaired and was an easy drive and very scenic similar to Montana Mtn. The only difficult section was the last 5-10 miles before it connects with the US60 north of Superior. You'll come to a still operational mine or something and the trail merges with their truck route for a half mile or so. Then it splits off again and become moderately difficult. The truck route will lead to the US 60 also, but there are signs posted "mine trucks only".

Not sure where 172 is.

FR 172 is the start of Montana Mountain off Queens Valley road. FR 172 dead ends at a private ranch that will shoot. You will need to turn at FR172A to get to FR650. At the junction of FR172A and FR650 is a short spur that will take you to the Revis trail head a popular hiking area. There is a cool valley you can drop into on the left just past the junction but be warned 4wd will be required. Picture is coming out of the road to the valley.

At this point, Phil's 60 has little need for fuel, maybe for Jewish lightning?:D:lol:
