Here and there
Hi folks!

Newbie here.

I have a mint PZJ70 swb that I want to swap a 1hz into.

My question is: Will the 1HZ just drop in? or is there anything that I have to move around?

I plan on keeping the same 5 speed transmission it came with.

Thanks!

Most 1PZ come with a dual clutch aNd 2 piece flywheel from memory. The radiator position may have to be moved forward for the 1HZ. What transmission do you have?

It doesn't have the ID plate on the firewall, but based on the chassis #, it has the transmission with part number 33030-60800.

I am assuming it is a R151 because apparently that's what they commonly came with.

From what I've read, it is ideal to use the flywheel and clutch from the 1HZ.

I am wondering if keeping the transmission the same, the 1HZ will just fit where the 1pz is. I took measurements from a hzj70 chassis and the engine mounts seem to be on the same place but I have no idea what transmission it had.

There is no movement (or changing out) of the radiator itself. Just have to use 1HZ hoses instead of 1PZ hoses. They are not the same.

To confirm: Even if keeping the R151, the transmission will be need to move to the rear?
See if you can get someone to compare the R151 belhousing from a 1HZ powered 70 series to the r151 from behind the dual clutch PZ . Bolt pattern is the same but there might be some difference in the lenght . 1PZ runs a deeper radiator shroud then 1HZ so you might have enough space to swap one with the other without moving the transmission back . I swapped 2 PZ's to 1HZ's but always swapped the R151 for H55's also and moved the transmission support back.

Also check part numbers on the input shaft for each model, the splines are the same but some R151’s had 6.5” input shafts and some had 7.5” (measuring from the front face of the transmission). I believe the later transmissions (1996 and up) had the longer version.

The input shaft seems to be specific to the 1PZ, I also couldn't find 70 series with the 1HZ and any other transmission than the H55.

Considering swapping the input shaft may be a lot of work, I could find a H55.

Did the shifters stay in the same place in your swap or did you have to cut holes? Or only the support needed to be moved back?

All the Euro spec 70 series after 1999 came with 1HZ/R151 and a ton of mine cruisers in Canada also . shifters relocate but you can just swap the plate on the inside from one model to the other.

Just fyi in other regoins the 70 series with 1HZ even came with H150 and H151 transmissions , toyota builds them different depending on where they are going to.

That makes sense. Where I live we get the "General" market LCs. They are widely available, but they all seem to use the H55F with the 1HZ on the 70 series.

80 series do have the H150/H151.

I was hoping someone had done just the engine swap and that everything else would fit so I don't have to source a transmission too.

To expand a little more, the R151 is still used today in new LC pickups here with the 1HZ, so I should be able to source one without too much effort.

Hello,

1PZ engines had a particular flywheel because they had 5 cylinders.

If possible, get a 1HZ with an R151. Less fabrication.

Newer models have the transmission lever moved some 30 mm to 50 mm to the rear.

I am getting a modern (2021) R151 for the 1HZ. I actually appreciate the shifter moved to the rear a little bit, the ergonomics are better.

Hopefully I don't have to cut new holes and just use a different plate with boot.

Hello,

Good choice. In that way you do not have to consider shaft spline count or an adapter.

I am not sure but it might be possible to put in a newer mode plate.

Off hand, you’ll need a clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing and a very specific bellhousing adapter (Toyota part). The HZ is longer so you need to do fabrication on mounting. Combination of trans and motor. Obviously the swb is different than my 77, but it’s not so cut and dry as far as I know. @orangefj45 has been working on dropping a 1HZ in to replace my toasted 1PZ and may be able to give better insight. Some pictures Georg shared with me below.
