Hi there,

Does anyone have pictures/instructions on where to install a pyrometer on an LJ78? I'd like to do this some time, but don't know where to start.

Thanks

Can not tell you how to install it however I can tell you installing the pyrometer will be money well spent. You might be surprised to see how hot the turbo runs on your LJ78 especially in overdrive while going up an incline. ......1978HJ45

how I did mine

The advice I got was to install the pyro probe before the turbo as that will give a more accurate read on the temps in the engine; it's easier to install it after the turbo but the temps will be a bit lower. Because you are installing before the turbo, you need to make sure no metal filings get into the exhaust manifold as you drill; they should fall down and out but put some grease on the manifold before you drill to be sure.

Here's a photo of my probe, installed on the bottom of the exhaust manifold just before it goes up into the turbo. It's not too hard to get at if you remove the wheel.

I'm really glad I installed mine. My unit LJ78, even after some of the recommended modifications (2.5" exhaust, increase boost) can still climb up to 1300 degrees climbing hills so I really use this to make sure I don't go over 1200 and I now have 50k on my rebuild head.
