BAM! So it seems I am finally a Cruiserhead now:
First, I want to thank people here for putting up so much info on this board. I’ve been lurking here a lot in the past few months and it helped me a great deal choosing my truck.
Speaking of the truck here are the details:
Model: BJ70
Year: 1987
Engine: 3B
KM: 330000km
Now I have to stop gazing at it through the window and go out start fixing it up. Because if I want to put it in the drive way this winter, it shall not leak any fluid on the pavement. And if I want to drive it legally, it shall have a new windshield and exhaust line. There is also some cosmetic rust on the body, hinges to fix on the tailgate and the interior needs to be freshen up, but these will come later as there are some more urgent stuff to do.
For the windshield, I was quoted a surprisingly low price: 400$ (new glass, install and tx included). So that’s a no brainer.
For the exhaust I plan on making my own out of stainless steel. I’ll buy 2.5” straight and mandrels of 409 and TIG them together with a few flanges here and there. But for the muffler, I am quite clueless… When bringing the truck back home, the mean look of that old lady in my neighborhood made me realize how loud it is (the exhaust is fractured right at the passenger front wheel and is held in place with a tin can and two clamps). I am considering using a Magnaflow muffler like this one: http://www.magnadirect.ca/product/10416 . My concern is that it might be too loud compared to an oval baffled muffler? (For the record, I don’t really care about that old lady, but I just don’t want to get bothered by the authorities about illegal level of noise).
Now about the leaks… the steering box is leaking badly:
I’ve read on these boards that the steering system should be filled with ATF fluid (confirmed in the owner’s manual), not steering fluid (the PO has put Lucas steering stuff in there). Some report that putting back ATF fluid in a leaky steering box completely stopped the leaking. I’ll first purge the system and fill it with proper fluid. If it does not work, I’ll try rebuilding the thing. The shop manual provides an excellent step by step tear down procedure. However, I can’t find any sign of part# in the manual for any seal or bearing replacement parts. All the fancy tools they are using have an SST number, but the parts to be replaced are not identified by an OEM number. Should I simply drop by the nearest Toyota dealer and expect them to know what I am talking about?
More pics (and a lot more questions) will come later.
Thanks guys,
Marc
