Have a 97 with 260k+ on the odometer. One previous owner and I know he kept up on the maintenance. Recently it has been drinking oil like crazy and the motor just seems tired. I work for S.E.T., so am deciding to put a new short block in it. Planning on doing the motor mounts too while it is out. Anyone have other suggestions on what I should do while it is pulled? Thanks in advance and let the fun begin in a month or so.....

Engine swap You are most likely correct, however sometimes things are not what they appear. Sad thread. If its had all maint kept current Is all. Good Luck.!! Replace rear heater hard lines, while engine is out. Its the only way to do I right.

I will take your current perfectly fine short block from you if you just getting rid of it. You must have plenty of cash around or get good discounts to just write off your old short block like that. More than likely your oil loss is from your front or rear seals, oil pan gaskets, valve stem seals, or any other 20+ year old seal on the vehicle. Maybe your piston rings are worn down a little, but judging from the short blocks I've seen pictures of, and my own short block when I rebuilt it, most likely your bottom end doesn't look much different then when it left the factory.

In short, if you have the budget, and you can find one, a new OEM short block would be cool. Its doubtful that you really need it though. You could be spending that extra money on cool gear like suspension, armor, well pretty much anything.

My oil consumption went to zero after getting the head rebuilt with new valve guides and seals... Just saying...

Thanks guys. This is my daily driver. Also planning a trip to Upstate NY this year and Cali next year, from here in S FL. Yes working for S.E.T. does help, but in no ways is it cheap. I know nothing is full proof, but think this is my best option for getting to these places without having issues and thinking I can get another 300k out of her. And yes, I should do those aft hoses. They are a bitch. Thanks again.

I guess you can just call Reb or Casey, drive up to the PDC and get a new short block right off of the dock.

They have it in stock, of course. 11400-66041

I am in the middle of my swap.

Engine harness is brittle and had the melted wires by the egr tube.

Changed the PHH hose while its out.

Oil pressure sender will be new.

If you haven't, make sure the intake hose to the tb is air tight.

EXACTLY.... and make it right. Wouldn't happen to have the part # for the mounts?

Hey your close by.. I am in Boynton Beach. I am in the middle of my engine swap. There is a guy on Miami CL parting out an 80, he wont part it out unless he sells the engine first. hit me up via PM>. Check out my 80 evolved v2.0 thread below to see what I am up too.

@half k cruiser I have a block I will be selling once I complete my swap, hit me up if your interested!

My mechanic couldn't get the dowels out of the old block.
The brown injector connectors were so brittle that the lock tabs broke off. The white ones are fine.
Some of the flex plate bolt heads were slightly rounded off after a previous repair to the rear main seal.
And go get some of the allen head fasteners for the oil pump cover.
For some reason my coolant drain plug off of the old block will not go into the new block.

Will let you know if other items come up.
