-- with some telephone coaching from landtank rick --

-- my '91s got the bling-needle bearings on it's RH side now --

-- this stuff DOES get easier the more you do it --

Nice pic, :)

Eric,

Congrats on doing that yourself. Getting in there can be intimidating, but you've learned a lot. Congrats.

thanks for this mike --

-- i even torqued the brake calipers to 90 lbs -- that is certainly a re-assuring "click" -- i was instead expecting skinned knuckles -- :D

-- well, i'll get to tear it down and re-assemble it before this week is up -- for that hub-seal -- no biggie --

-- now though, when i'm driving, i am super sensitive to any vibrations, etc -- wondering, "is that this or that" -- anyway, it's nothing -- i'm just paranoid -- :)

the brass-caps were a bitch to get off, too -- i would suggest always to replace those -- they get pretty nasty, trying to get them off without dinging them up --

-- another thing i learned from the FSM was to put some amsoil in the brass cap before it goes back on -- silly stuff, but decent --

:D

It gets a lot easier the more you do it. Messy and nasty, but, I don't trust anyone else to do it right.

It's really not too bad once you've done it, huh?

Eric,

Did you have to replace the whole spindle, or just the bushing and blingy bearing?

How did you know to replace it and what does it do that the stock brass thing cant do?
I didn't see any wear on the brass thing when I repacked the knuckle with 240,000+ mi on it?
Why does it wear out on some and not others?

The brass bushing needs to be cleaned and lube periodically or the shaft will tear it apart. Eric's bushing was worn to the point that the inner grease channels were gone. You might remember my noise problem when it got cold last year. That was a result of a bushing neglected during the axle job.

I think that replacing the bushing along would require a press. Personally if I were to replace a birf I'd consider replacing the bushings so all contact surfaces were new. This would probably exclude a birf grenading on the trail and more like one worn out at an elder age.

r2 -- we replaced the whole spindle -- I'm not sure how much a shop would charge to press a new bushing in, and with my luck, they'd knock it out-of-round when they pressed it --

-- and i wanted the needle bearing, which to my knowledge i couldn't put on a '91 spindle --

:)
