I have found a fair deal on a 2013 LX460 Premium (has everything buy Crawl) with impeccable dealer service records and 50k miles on the clock. Aside from any obvious rust on the underside (shouldn't have much being a TX vehicle) and testing the locking center diff, are there any other obvious signs I should be on the look out for that are notorious problems fore this year/model? The driver seat is a little more worn than I'd like, but I can overlook that if everything else checks out. I also plan to have an independent Lexus mechanic go over it as well, as obviously more sets of eyes are better, IMHO and I'm fairly new to the Toyota brand. I did comb through threads on GXOR and nothing really stood out.

Thanks in advance...really looking forward to moving from a Jeep into a Japanese platform. :)

Seems the most common items to look our for are a timing chain leak, valve cover leak, and be prepared for the secondary air pump and valves to fail at some point. The secondary air pump and valves are covered by Lexus for 10 years (unlimited miles). I've seen a couple of water pumps leaking and coolant valley plates leaking (the valley leak seems rare at this point).

I've had the issue on mine with the timing cover leak, the valve cover leak, and the air pumps. Plus had the airbag recall done.

Thanks for the feedback. I assume the secondary air pump is for the rear suspension? I plan to convert he rear to coils at some point, so that should hopefully be a non-issue. This one looks to have already had the airbag re-call done according to the Lexus owner's site, so that is good.

No, this is part of the engine air intake. When you first start the car the air pump forces more air into the intake to get the car warmed up faster for emissions purposes. The pump and the valves that control the air flow into the intake can fail. Lexus usually replaces both valves and the pump during the recall. They have to fail before the recall can be performed.

Good deal, thanks! I've torn apart plenty of engines on other vehicles, so this appears to be relatively minor from what I'm seeing. Good to know about though when it inevitably shows up.

Lexus will repair it for free up to 10 years.. so no need to tear into it yourself to fix the air pump and valves.

The secondary air pump on my 2013 failed at 57k. It kinda sucks because the car goes into limp mode, so if you're on a long trip it'll set you back. I don't remember if Lexus will do the warranty work proactively, or if you have to wait for the failure to occur. Best to do it proactively if possible. The rear ABS wire on mine failed as well, which was just a nuisance but took a while to figure out. Otherwise just normal maintenance for me.

I believe you can get around this by unplugging the air pump and resetting the codes. You'll still get dash lights, but the car will no longer be in limp mode.

According to the extended warranty mailer, the parts have to have failed before they will replace them.

Going back through the Lexus service history, this shows up at the 40k mile mark. I assume this is what we're discussing. P2445 seems to be one of the related codes.

SERVICE: NON WARRANTABLE OPERATION CODE
DESCRIPTION: NON WARRANTABLE OPERATION CODE ~|~C/S THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AS WELL AS THE 4-LOW LIGHT IS BLINKING. CHECK AND ADVISE ~|~P2445 PRESENT AIR PUMP STUCK OFF BANK ONE ~|~REPLACED AIR PUMP, COVER AND VALVES.

I haven't put my hands on the vehicle yet...going this weekend, but I'll definitely check to see what the pump looks like. The service was done 6/2017, so I would assume it is the correct, updated one.

My air pump failed before they issued the bulletin, but just out of warranty. 3rd party vendor did the repair out of warranty for $1800. I complained to Lexus that it was a "known problem" and they should at least meet me half way on the cost. They did just that. Then, some months later when Lexus sent me the bulletin notice, I called them again about what I had done. They fully reimbursed me the remainder with no hassle at all! Go Toyota/Lexus!!

Nice to hear! I'll have to remember that.

Check all body panels because the bumper gaps are held together with plastic clip mounts and easily broken. Even with a shopping basket. Check airbags and suspension for function and all HVAC and NAV. Check all fluids and filters.
