I'm rebuilding my PTO box and the reverse idler gear bushing is showing some wear. Its not trashed- but there is some scoring that looks to me to be heat related. Not sure how that could happen- I suppose there could have been some transfer box shavings hanging out in the bottom to the box there. I have no idea as the box is new to me.

The bushing itself is NLA. I'd probably have to have one made and its not an easy job. To me it looks usable- especially since I have never had a box with reverse before. So what do you use reverse for and in what situations?

Best!

Yep- pretty sure that its for making boards and beams etc.

As far as my question- so far the only thing I can imagine using reverse on the PTO box for is lowering my truck or another truck down something that is too steep or slippery to drive down. Any one have any actual usage that they want to share?

You use the revers the same way you use the power out of any winch. To lower a load or release tension on the line for whatever reason you might have.

Ok- but what is the point of having it on the pto box as opposed to just putting the tranny in reverse? Just a speed thing I guess. The reverse idler gear is the only part of the box that rides on a bushing as opposed to bearings. As such it will never last nearly as long as the other components of the box. I'll use it for letting line out and light stuff but for something really heavy I think I'll stick to using reverse on the tranny.

So long as you have some way to reverse, I would not loose sleep over it.

I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to Toyota PTO winches.
Did a lot of oilfield winching in the old days.
Thinking about this, is the "in and out" control style the later version that Toyota went to from the "forward - neutral - reverse" setup. It looks like the 3 position shifter was used from 80/08 to 82/10, at least with middle east specs.
My parts book shows a rigid linkage (not cable) for the newer version beyond 82/10 where the shifter lever has a lock knob.
The in and out style PTO was probably cheaper to manufacture, but Toyota may of had another reason for going this way.

I wonder about operation of 1 type verses the other.
If you had to change direction while winching and was at a critical point with the load, what happens when the PTO passes thru the neutral position - does the drum freewheel out losing control?
Maybe this happens with both setups?
Does the winch drum freewheel when the (foot) clutch is disengaged as there is no brake on the winch drum?

Sorry this may be a bit of a hi-jack.

The Toyota PTO winch, like all PTO winches, is a worm gear design. A worm gear is auto braking. That is to say that the screw can make the gear turn but the gear can not turn the screw.

It can only let line out under power or if you disengage the drum from the driveline. You can not overpower the winch and pull line out unless the winch is actually ripped apart.

Fair enough Mark. Thanks.
Your worm gear theory must be / has got to be correct.
Straight forward now that you mention it.
What about the shifter stick thing (to anybody who has one) - is the configuration for different years of USA spec the same as what I said is the case for middle east spec?
Just wondering

The early US PTOs were forward-neutral-reverse. There may have been early ones that were only engage-disengage.... I have been told that there were. But I have never seen one and of the 10 or so PTO boxes I have here, none are like that.

The later ones in the US all seem to be the engage-disengage style.

Just out of curiosity did the early reverse idler gear run on a bushing? I have a split case unit with forward/neutral/reverse.

An aside- having a hell of a time getting the front half of the pto drive shaft to come off.......

Good questions and good answers- thanks-

Pete
