Hey All,

I searched this site for PTO driven hydraulic winch data, and I really only found information on the PTOs that are driven off of the TC.

I'm in the middle of a Diesel conversion on my FZJ80 using a 4D34T and AW450-43LE out of a Fuso box truck...

https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tec...shi-4d34-2at3b-diesel-swap-into-96-fzj80.html

The AW450-43LE has an SAE 6-bolt standard PTO flange on the drivers side, and I started brainstorming about the possible uses. I litterally know nothing about PTOs, but I've done some reading on Muncie's site, and I'm fairly sure I can but an off the shelf PTO drive and a ydraulic pump that will work. Then all I'd need is a hydraulic winch, lines, and a reservoir.

I've read some of the downsides of hydraulic winches... such as no drive with a dead motor and no drive if your foot is on the clutch, but I think my situation is a bit different. Since the trans is an automatic, the PTO will always be driven unless I disengage it, right? The Fuso also came with a slick idle adjustment knob that can be mounted in the truck to bump up the idle while winching.

How are hydraulic winches controlled? A lever on the winch? Do I need a control valve in-line with the pressure line to the winch?

I'm sorry in advance for all the nub-type questions, but Google isn't teaching me a whole lot on this one.

MM hydraulic winches are remote controled as any other electric winch .. having a dedicated pump drived by PTO gear will make that winch ( or winches ) fast and powerfull ..

most tow trucks have pto driven hydraulic winches check out some of those .

You will need a PTO that can be disengaged. Hydraulic pumps don't like to spin at road speeds. I've seen the damage done. Don't do that! The winch is typically controled by a valve in the pressure lines. Don't forget a reservoir for the hydraulic fluid and possibly a cooler of some sort.

Aren't the MM winches supposed to be driven off of the power steering pump? Wouldn't a PTO driven pump potentially supply too much CFM/Pressure?

Yea I'm trying to see if I can get one from a junkyard... that would be the most ideal (cheap) solution.

The PTO drives I've been looking at can all be disengaged, so that won't be a problem. I'll keep doing my research!

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

well then that would depend's on the speed and specs of the pump .. ;)
