Well it is time again for me to do a fun project, despite all the "must do projects" I have on my plate, I think a few of you out there know what I am talking about ;)

The last expedition build I did was my 2007 Toyota Tundra, and that was out of nesessity because my regular expedition vehicle was a 1997 HZJ75 from Australia and it was right hand drive, which is really not a good idea to drive in Baja with (small roads for the ones they have so lots of passing, scarry with Right hand drive).

So I have been asked why I am always buying and doing project with Cruisers that are diesel and not found here in the US. The answer is simple, I like them and I have can do them. But some seem to get upset because of that none the less.

For all those that want to see more projects with Cruisres sold here in the US, this project is for you :)

We have a wonderful Land Cruiser here in the US that in my opinon is a great platform for work on. I am talking about the Land Cruiser Prado Plaform, not a rugged as the normal Land Cruiser platform but is still much better than what else is sold here in the US. Typically you know about the prado from the 4runner or most recently from the FJ Cruiser, but call me old school, I like the shape and design of the prado that is sold everywhere else in the world and the closest to that in the US is the Lexus GX 470, aside from the front clip is the shape of the Real Prado, and one thing they got right or better of the FJ is the engine, they use the 4.7l V8 which I like much better than the 4.0l V6. Sure there is some debate you can make between the two but the biggest reason I like it is it is better on fuel economy, on average around town in the 14's and up on the hyway 19-20 easily, I have not seen those number with the FJ at all.

My vehicle of choice is Lexus GX470, I picked a used 2005 for a very good price, I like the 05' because it has the VVTI 4.7 which bumps the power to 270hp.

I did not know what to expect with the GX, just knew that I liked the body style and having an FJ in the past and selling and installing lift kit for the 4runners and FJ I knew the suspension pretty well. I can tell you that after getting the Lexus I was even more impressed with the power and factory ride, and handling on the GX so much so that it is routinely my daily driver to work. This completly changed my thinking on what to modify and it certainly became an expedition build over an off road build.

I don't want to mislead you, there are those out there that have gone completly crazy with mods and built some great wheeling GX's so it is very capable, this is not going to be one of those builds. It is going to mild in comparison just enough to make it a very decent Expedition rig for going camping and expeditioning, and I will certainly test it out in Baja very soon.

So enough chit-chat here are some pics of the stock GX, I will have mod pictures to follow:

Ever heard of Toyotas?

Cause there's a herd of 'em in the background! :flipoff2:

Let's see this buildup! :steer:

Since I have plenty of other cruisers for hard core stuff and variety of trail rigs I thought I would go somewhat mild on the tire size. I did nto want to get into removing all the flares and steps or cutting the fenders. Again this is an expedition rig, and to some extent the running board help not hurt much.

I took a look at the suspension and very interesting rear air bags, front is pretty much what you find on 4runner and FJ. The shocks however are the elctronically controlled ride type, comfort - sport. I think in the long run this will all have to go but no harm is building around it for now and see how well it works and if it even makes a difference on that tough Baja Wash board roads.

With that in mind I decided to go with no more than 32" tire and not too wide, so 9" wide will do the trick. Also for now I kept the stock tires and wheel together and picked up some new-takoff Steel 17" FJ Wheel - I love these they are strong and functional and very inexpensive - $50 per wheel.

Oh, the first thing I did was open the hood and try to find the engine so all that plastic engine bay covering and engine cover had to go (as seen in the pictures).

I settled on the BFG Mudder KM2 LT245/75R17E They came in at 31.7x9.5x17 which allowed me to get them on with no mods.

I would have gone with my favorite tires Truxus, however if you have not heard Interco went out of business near the end of last year, well that is what I heard, and no one is carrying the line anymore except a few with inventory still :crybaby:

Cheers,

Michael

Next on the list was what to do about the roof top tent I use when I go expeditioning, I have a columbus which is 5x7'.

The Roof rack can handle the weight but what I have found in the past is I really need that bolted down good on the rough and non existant roads. First thought was pull the factory one off and fab up an new beefier steel square tube roof rack, that would be a fun little project. But after a little research and looking for some off-road roof rack for the Lex I found nothing was out there. However I have some thule bars and gutter mounts I used with my troopy so maybe they have someting, and sure enough they had adapters that were made for my roof rack, I can even use the bars I already have. So I picked those up, I usually run 3 bars just for the extra safety just in case something breaks on one of the bars I still have two doing the work.

Okay, as much as I like what Lexus has done with the 120 series I really need to badge it as a Prado 120, I will feel better:cool:
So no more lexus badging on the rear, all ready for new badges on the way.

"j-hole"?? Where's that coming from?

No offense intended, I've personally always respected you.

Back O/T how does it compare overall to the bling of the LX470 you used to have? More tolerable I'd imagine since you have so many inherent gains with using the '05

Looks like it's going to be a nice build on a great platform! I think you have identified a good goal for this vehicle and it appears you aren't messing with too many of the systems that make this such a good truck. I'm really interested in how the rear suspension holds up and what your thoughts are. I've been eying my wife's white 470 for years, now only if she would loose interest and let me take it over.

Mike...I LOVE this build! And the FJC 17" Steelies look great on the 120! I will be following this one closely.

Mike...how do you like the 245/75/17's?

I like the tires a lot, they houl up on the hyway but handle and ride great. I really wanted to put Truxus tires on this but since Interco went belly up, I found myself looking for a replacement. My buddy bought some km2's for his diesel 80 and I was really impressed with the pattern and fact you can get some that are not really wide. This 17" ones I put on the Lex are only 9" wide which I really love.

Michael

:repost:

Some new badging, not sure if I like the front yet, an update I finally got my Prado badges :bounce:

Badging is looking good!

Looks like I have all of the body changes done, now we get down to the good stuff - suspension and Drivetrain :D

I have been asked a few times why I am bothering with the looks of this Cruiser first and not the important stuff. Well the answer is simple, I had to research on what I want to do with the suspension, and even though the A750F is probably the best Automatic Transmission Toyota has built, with a new Valve Body from Wholesale automatices it will make it so much better, I have one is stock, but Rodney has just revised it to make it better yet, so I am waiting on parts as well. Since this is a short time frame to my little expedition trip, I have to do what I can when I can :)

I have new Rotors and Brake pads just need to put them on. Since this is not the typical Land Cruiser I work on I am trying some new Vendors, for the Rotors and Pads I am going to give EBC a shot and see how there products hold up.

As much as I wanted to keep the Original Shocks on this, I have found no easy or good way to do it with the front solenoids so they must go because I really do need some lift in the front end. I originally thought it would be cool to keep them but realistically I never use comfort mode only sport mode.

I am sure my choice is different from everyone else in the US since I have the correct springs and shocks in inventory from Dobinsons that is what I will use. I know I am on the only one using them since I am the only reamaining dealer in the US and no one buys this kit from me

I will leave the rear airbags in place for now, I think they work pretty well so just 4 shocks and front springs should do the trick.

Cheers,

Michael

Black Pearl the front emblem for some subtle bling. ;)

I started out with some gloss black on the emblem but it seem to stand out too much. the emblem I am using actually has a solid back which covers the old lexus plasic housing so harder to get the black perl wirframe look from it without a lot more work.

Great Idea though.

Cheers,

Michael

*FWIW remember to measure the rake angles of the vehicle now before you install the lift on it using the body seam or beltline as a end point from the ground. The reasoning here is when you lift it you will likely want the front just a tad higher. That will make the yaw/roll sensor go a little batty. Had to deal with this on a recent project where the guy had the fuel cutoff happen at odd times because although the suspension and everything were working flawlessly, the computer was still reading things as if they were still on a factory/static setup. He'd accelerate off and when he let off just a slight amount or started to stop the fule would cut-out causing a drop in vacuum pressure just when it did not need to be happening. :steer:

Besides, it'll all play in if/when you throw any level of armor on there. :D

I could not take it anymore, so the front springs and all for shocks had to go. I replaced them with the tried and true Dobbinsons mild setup maybe 2" lift in the front. Rides just as good, corners better, I kept the rear bags but it is clear they are not as stout as springs would be but then again I am trying not to get crazy with this Prado.

I like the lift, it's left you with a fair angle of approach.
Any plans to lose the running boards?

Just wanted to let everyone know Interco tire is still in business. I talked with them today. They transfered all their tire molds to one location and while resetting the molds they got behind on production.:)

okay. But where does this tie into the thread at hand?
Nothing personal, but I'm curious.
