I think the relatively common way of handling that is to cut a rectangle around the fill plug, flip it around, and weld it back in place.

There I go reinventing the wheel again. I figured the easiest would be to blast a hole in it, weld in a 3/4" half coupling and stick a pipe plug in it. :D

so the only 25 rims only fit a 25 front axle?

Front is out of a '71 FJ40. Not because I don't trust the ball and claw axles and wanted to upgrade to birfields.......but because I don't have enough stock rims to run a FJ25 front end. ;)

Knuckle arms are different, so the tie rod will rub on a FJ40 rim, need something like a 2 - 2 1/2" backspacing to work. I had stock FJ40 rims on with a 1/2" spacer and it's close.

John sent me a "good as new" 10 spline third member from an early 40 with a lock-right installed. :D So I commenced to rebuilding the rear last weekend.

Here's how I remove the rear wheel bearings. There's probably a right way to do it. Good news here is that everything (rear wheel bearings, seals, c-clips) is the same as the early 40.

Not peculiar to the centered rear axle.....just early ones. The third is attached with 8mm studs not 10mm common to the later diff. The PO had just stuck the later diff with the big holes on the housing with the little studs, and I found the diff rotated on the studs (should have taken a picture). I doubt the misalignment was doing it any good. Anyhow, I drilled out the holes and retapped them 10mm x 1.25.

After fiddling around with the lock-right I finally figured out what I was doing wrong.............then I read the directions.

Thanks for asking. Hasn't changed too much, got the motor set up to run, bolted up some shocks and then got distracted with another project. Hated to post a pic where the only change was a set of shocks. :frown:

Next step is to make a good body. I've got a good front 1/2 tub and a pretty good rear 1/2 tub. So I just need to splice them together and fix the rear channel. Hopefully keeping it all steel with little to no filler. :D

I've actually tossed around the idea of putting the stock tranny/transfer/rear end back in it and keeping it close to original ..........

NOOOO....!! You already got a nice original truck. Building a wheeling rig would be far cooler IMHO. But then I'm not a restoration kinda guy...

Cool truck either way, Jim.

NOOOO....!! There's not enough original 25s still out there.

STOCK IS GOOD!! :D :D

Well Nick, you’re right …….. and you too Steve. My “thought” was that I really can’t have three FJ25’s………..so, the first or the last in the series might go bye-bye. #47 is the best of the lot and we’re a little attached to it, #48 would probably be the best candidate for a wheeler……..since most everything is shot. :D So, if I sell #49 here after it’s finished……would it be worth (value here is not necessarily cash – but the ability to move quickly at a fair price) as basically stock or modified? Keeping in mind “modified” in this case is the SM420/Toybox, a 25 rearend with a 40 third, and a 40 frontend, but keeping such highly desireable features like early manual steering and FJ25 brakes.

Or……forget about it……press on……and when this is finished (CMCC ’06) ……… and I feel the need for something else……put on the redneck hardtop and hang a plow on it….and move on to #48?

WHAT the heck you "thinking"? CAN'T have three 25s?....Well, go ahead and think it to yourself, I have to delete this thread so the ole lady doesn't catch on...as far as she knows Everybody Needs at least five! C'mon Jim, little help here...

Dibs?

OK, all better now. Press on it is. :bounce:

But Phil, at some point these would all be running and useable 25's!

And there's something wrong with having that??

Nah, Jim. Keep 'em all. Why not? Not to sound narcissistic, but let's face it . . . . no one's more worthy of owning all these 25s than us guys.

By the way,
I don't want to tell you who I am, I'm not going to tell you what I got, and it's none of your business why I need it, but . . . . .

i need a Fj25 grill. :shotts:

(Sorry, but I couldn't resist that one. :D :D )

Nothing wrong with a little bling every now and then.

But, since you gave me some grief over a chrome exhaust tip, I can't help but mention your pretty little pink tranny. :princess: :princess:

I'll have to get the girls to rule on that one........I'm thinking it's mauve. :flamingo:

Well, I rolled the frame out of the garage and slid the tub around to take a look at it. this is the bottom of the front half which is real solid. Problem is, to fit the disc parking brake I would have to chop the perfect tunnel right at the reinforcing rib on top. It already hurt to cut the two tubs but I'm not chopping a good floorboard to fit a mod. :crybaby:
