I've searched, yet can't seem to find the exact procedure. I lost one of my master keys; thankfully I still have the 2nd master to work off of. I'm purchasing a new 3 button key with transponder chip inside. Does anyone know the step-by-step instructions for the brake pedal/door/unlock dance to properly program this?

I know taking it to Lexus locally here, they'll gouge me. Thanks for any input in this matter :)

Also, the best deal I've found on purchasing one is $90 on fleabay. Anyone know of a better deal to get an uncut key with electronics and 3 button control?

There's stuff in the FAQ for this arbetrader. I followed the ignition coding from the suggestions in the FAQ (becareful of what year you follow and these important lil words like "waiting 5 seconds" or "within 6 seconds"). At which time I also saw the door lock programming sequence but my locks have a wiring problem so the programming won't work.

Door locks

Snippet ... "I had problems getting my door locks to re-program. I know it's a different model (03 4Runner) but maybe it will help you figure yours out.

This is from another 4R owner:
I wanted to choose option (B):
All the side doors and back door are automatically unlocked when the automatic transmission selector in moved to the "P" position with the ingnition switch in the "ON" position.

The Manual says:

1.) close all the side doors and back door
2.) Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position
3.)within 3 seconds after the switch is turned to the "ON" positon; pucsh and hold the rear of the power door lock switch for 5 seconds with the automatic transmission selector in the "P" position.

I did this several times with no success.

Then I read the manual again...

On the same page in a later paragraph it said;
All the side doors and back door automatically lock and unlock when you release the power door lock switch. This indicates the function is set. If all the side doors and back door do not loack and unlock, the time the switch was held may be too long or too short. Perform the procedure over again.

Anyway, I tried it again (being more careful to hold it down for the prescribed 5 seconds) and it worked."

Thanks Lexi, I really appreciate that. I will go through this sequence and hopefully I get success too. Cheers :)

So, for anyone interested that needs a new master key, I didn't want to take a chance buying some cheap knockoff through Ebay only to get fleeced, I bought this factory oem unit through remotesandkeys.com. The price was $149.95 that includes free shipping to lower 48. It comes with programming instructions.

https://www.remotesandkeys.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=4304A

I'll report once I have received the product and (hopefully) successfully program/cut.

arbetrader - let us know how the programming sequence works too. Would be good to confirm FAQ instructions/steps with your process.

Thanks for this thread! I've had a key for my 2003 LC where the remote wouldn't lock or unlock the car despite changing batteries so I did this and it worked:

Program Remote: (sequence I – 2003+)
1. Start with the key out of the ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and
drivers door is unlocked.
2. Perform these steps within 5 seconds.

  • Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
  • Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.

  • Close then open the drivers door.
  • Close then open the drivers door.
  • Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.

  • Close then open the drivers door.
  • Close then open the drivers door.
  • Insert the key into ignition and leave it in ignition.
  • Close the drivers door.
  • Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF.
  • Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically
indicating successful entry into programming mode.
Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.
6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.

  • Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds.
  • Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, Press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming. If the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote was not accepted.
  • Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.
7. Open drivers door.

The bad part is now my neighbors think I'm some sort of psycho opening and closing my car door and inserting and removing the key so many times.

I'm surprised Toyota didn't make me pat my head and rub my belly at the same time. I once had to enter a cheat code into my son's Wii for him and thought it was a pain (left right left right star x square left right left right) but that was nothing compare to getting my 2003 to recognize the remote!

Which brings me to the subject of this thread, I think what is happening is the Toyota is learning the remote, rather than teaching the remote how to recognize the code to open the Toyota (if that makes sense). So I don't know if it would be possible to "teach" one remote from another.

I programmed a remote on my 04 using the sequence a few posts above this one. Worked great.

Also tried to add a new transponder, and as others have said, no dice on the 04 LC. Looks like it has to be hooked up to TechStream to add a transponder.

Ok, so here's my question:

I have my new key blank, and I was going to have it cut here at the local locksmith. They CANNOT code the key to the vehicle, JUST do a basic inner cut (LX470).

Once that's done, I'm assuming I'll have a key that will just unlock the doors and that's it.

After that, I was going to follow the programming instructions that came with the key. If I do that, will I be able to use the buttons to lock/unlock the doors AS WELL as starting the vehicle? OR does the transponder chip in there require some other type of programming (something I cannot do without equipment) to make it work to actually start the vehicle due to its ignition code?

I'm just wanting to make sure that the programming instructions that were included in this thread (earlier posted) will make it work to actually START the vehicle AND make the buttons work.

Some of you guys were mentioning something about a techstream (I don't know what that is, or how it relates at all to this) however that's making me a bit nervous now before I cut the key without the proper knowledge of doing this correctly.

Any input is great appreciated!

Here's a picture of the instructions that came with it (there were 2 pages):

It looks like following the bottom instructions will code the new master, and following the top instructions should set the buttons to work; is this correct?

My master key case just broke:censor: Now, my sensor is is out of the case and I use it to lock/unlock the vehicle. Luckily I have a vaket key. The problem I have is the master key that broke will no longer start the vehicle! It just continually turns over and over. Does the computer know if the sensor is no longer right next to the key? If I buy a new case and drop in the sensor and have it cut off the old master should the trick this do?

There are different instructions for programing the remote on the key for 98-2002 and 2003+ The instructions I posted above worked for my 2003+ to lock/unlock and to start and drive the car. For your 1999 you will need to follow these instructions:
In my research to figure out how to program keys to my LC I have compiled the following steps for all model year 100 series. I am posting this so that all steps for all models can be found in one list. Please note there are other variations that may work fine, but the below seem to work every time from posts I have read. Hope it helps.

The below information applies to the 4C and 4D transponder keys. The 4C is 1998-2002 also referred to as the “sequence E” programming steps; all steps below work for programming that key. The 4D chip is for 2003+ 100 series, also referred to as “sequence I” programming steps; many steps below will work for all 03+, however the ECU can not be programmed for 03-04 start capability without a computer per FSM (05+ should program with these steps from what I have read).

Also, please note that timing is critical, you must be spot on. If a sequence fails try again making sure the timing is exact. If you are still unable to program the new key into the ECU you may have too many keys programmed; there can be up to 5 master keys and 3 valet keys (per 03-04 FSM). If unsure you can clear all but one master key and program/reprogram any existing keys.

Tell what key you have:

To determine if the key(s) have been properly programmed into the ECM you may utilize the following procedure:

Positively locate the “security” or “anti-theft” light. This light should blink when there is no key in the ignition or if an unrecognized key is placed into the ignition.
Insert the key you have into the ignition – DO NOT TURN ON. There are 3 possible things that may occur:

Security light continues to blink = unrecognized key.
Security light goes off IMMEDIATELY = MASTER key
Security light remains illuminated for 1-3 seconds before going out = VALET key

***FOR ALL PROCEDURES BELOW make sure you start with the following steps unless otherwise stated:

All windows are up
All doors are shut and locked except for the drivers door which should be unlocked

Delete all but one master key:

To delete all but one key from the unit (ECM):

Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
Insert an existing master key into the ignition cylinder. Do not turn the key from the OFF (LOCK) position.
Within fifteen seconds of inserting the key, depress and release the accelerator pedal six times.
Within twenty seconds of completing the above step, depress and release the brake pedal seven times.
The security light will flash, indicating all keys other than the one being used have been deleted.
Remove the key from the ignition cylinder within ten seconds.

***Alternative method possibly for sequence I vehicles (2003+)

Insert Master Key and Cycle ignition 6 times (Lock to on then back to lock)
Within 35 seconds open and close Drivers side door 7 (seven) times.
Remove the key from the ignition cylinder within ten seconds.

Program new key (sequence E):

Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
Insert existing master key into ignition.
Within 15 seconds depress and release accelerator pedal 5 times.
Within 20 seconds depress and release the brake pedal 6 times and remove key.
Within 10 seconds insert new key into ignition.
Within 10 seconds depress and release the accelerator pedal 1 time.
After 80 seconds new key is registered and security light goes off.
Remove new key and depress and release brake pedal 1 time.

Program new key (sequence I – 2003+):

Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
Insert existing master key into ignition.
Within 15 seconds depress and release accelerator pedal 5 times.
Within 20 seconds open and close the “driver side” door 6 times and remove key.
Within 10 seconds insert new key into ignition.
Turn the ignition cylinder ON and leave on for two minutes.
Turn ignition cylinder OFF and remove new key
Open and close the “driver side” door 1 (one) time.
After 60 seconds new key is registered and security light goes off.
Remove new key and depress and release brake pedal 1 time.

Erase Remote Procedure (years this works on unknown):

Make sure no keys are in the ignition lock and the drivers door is open and unlocked.
Put the key in the ignition and remove it.
Press the lock button for 1 second, press the unlock button for 1 second and repeat 5 times.
Close the drivers door and open it.
Press the lock button for 1 second, press the unlock button for 1 second and repeat 5 times.
Put the key in the ignition.
Turn ignition ON for 1 second and then off for 1 second then on for 1 second and remove key.
The power door locks should cycle 2 times.
Press the lock and unlock button for 2 seconds, then press the unlock for 1 second.
If the remote is programmed the doors will cycle once. If failed the doors will cycle 2 times.
Open drivers door to end procedure.

Program Remote: (sequence E)

1. Start with key out of ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and driver’s door is unlocked.

2. Insert key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn) and Pull key out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.

Using the power lock switch on the drivers door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting with lock. Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second. (1Cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock).
Close, then open drivers door.
4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.

Take it to a locksmith, they should be able to put the old guts and old key into a new case for about $5.

Unfortunately, the remote key case design is weak and prone to breaking. I've lost count of how many have broken over the life of my LandBruiser. Believe it or not, these cheap after-market cases are every bit as strong as the genuine Toyota part but a LOT cheaper [typically $10 or so each].

NEW UNCUT BLADE REMOTE KEY CASE FOR Toyota CAR AUTO | eBay

Simply move the module and battery from the broken case to the new case, and have any decent locksmith cut the key blank to match your original. Because you are using the original remote module, no reprogramming is required.

Saillaw, Are you sure that will work on an LX and not just a Landcruiser? Can you confirm they are the same in that department? Mine has the integrated key/remote function and inner cut.

By the way, the reason I had to buy a new transponder is because I lost one of the keys...

I read about 30 pages of posts on the subject before doing mine and don't recall any talking about the Land cruiser being different than the Lexus, so I think it doesn't matter. But, I've only done it on the Land cruiser so can't personally confirm.

I'm guessing all I have to do is have it cut and replace the guts? Does anyone know why the broken master will not start my LC any longer?
