I had a ppd system installed on my 96 HDJ81 with the 1hd-ft engine and was mostly happy with it. You may have to slightly modify the center hangar mount, otherwise the tailpipe will hang down a bit too much under the rear bumper and be vulnerable to rocks and bumps off road. I sold the car maybe 6 months after installing it, so I can't speak towards the longevity or rust resistance, but it was cost effective and seemed high quality. I went with the muffler option and I think that was probably wise. It was a tiny muffler, but enough to knock the edge off the sound. I've subsequently done a straight pipe option on a couple 1kz Prados and the straight pipe on those is a bit too raw sounding (granted, different engine). I'd be comfortable going with the PPD again if I were doing a stainless solution. Given I live in an area where rust basically doesn't exist, I'd also explore non-stainless solutions... or as I learned on my Prados, buy just a dump pipe (the most complicated and labor intensive part) and have the rest of the system fabricated locally. The PPD system cost me around $850 USD including shipping plus installation, so maybe $1200ish fully installed - that's with whatever the AUD to USD conversion rate was 1-2 yrs ago and I'm guessing what I paid for the installation (long enough ago that I don't recall for sure). For comparison, a custom fabricated 3" aluminized steel exhaust on my Prado cost me about $1K plus maybe $350 to have a dump pipe shipped in from NZ, so roughly the same cost but sacrificed SS for steel. I think 3" dump pipes for the 1HD are much easier to find and likely are cheaper than for the 1kz.
