Hello everyone
I have a 1981 BJ42 with the 3B diesel. I would like to install Saginaw power steering.
Has anybody ever done this mod? Mounting the power steering box looks the same as the FJ40. But I would like to know about the pump mounting bracket and pulleys.
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks

We just did a install on a BJ60, we were short parts like the idler bracket which we fabricated up (bit of booty fab).

If you can get your hands on a complete system pump and braket plus low pully you are a direct bolt on.

By chance you cannot find the lower pull, we used a water pump pull off the BJ60 and mounted on the crank shaft using the bolt to hold it on.

All in all it worked out well.

i like the mini truck PS conversion, looks much more stock when completed. you will need an adapter to mont to the frame. what i do not like about the saginaw is the hole in the frame.
the best is to buy a complete setup from a 80 FJ40 or a wrecked BJ83-84...

Thank you for the replies
I would like to get away from all those moving parts, center arm and draglink assemblies
Mine wonders all over the road baddly. Center arm repair kit is $300 here. Tie rod ends all them are over 100.00 I ust want to eliminate all those moving parts.
Thanks

Hello seasons greetings

If I can find the pump and mounting bracket for a 3B, will the pump have enough pressure to power the Saginaw steering box??????
Thanks

something else to consider on your BJ40

I have an 84' BJ42 with factory power steering with 3B, and I was thinking about going with the siganaw steering until I looked at all the stuff I have to move where the linkage is going the battery mount, shock tower, mine has a bunch of stuff in the way. So I am gonig to use a steering box from a 60series those sit on top of the frame and hang off the side so you do not have to cut a large chunck out of the frame for the siganaw unit. Of course for me I have a few other reasons, I do not feel like replacing the huge 24v desset dynamics winch mounted on the front and I would have to do that if I want with saginaw steering. I orginally desided to do a swap out because I do not like the relay rod along side the drivers side wheel well, when I air down and turn hard my tire just touches it, so I figured time to get rid of the relay rod. Just my 2 cents.
