Hey folks - trying to diagnose a power steering issue in my 85 HJ60 and figured I'd use the general 60 thread as I imagine it's the same for the non-diesel 60s. Over the past several weeks the power steering in the cruiser has transiently totally gone out on me. It can be out for as short as a few minutes or an entire drive. The power steering makes no abnormal sounds when I start the engine or when I'm turning the wheel. Fluid level seems ok. Don't see any obvious belt problems. I am thinking this is a pump problem? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you

Changes are that your flow control valve is sticking in the bottom position in the pump housing.
When that happens there is no flow direction control.
You can check this when the situation occurs by removing the pressure hose from the top of the pump and the 27mm nut/retainer. Be careful with the O-ring.
Take a screwdriver and see if you can put it in the top slot on the valve and gently twist and push at the same time.
If the spring loaded valve pops upp ,you have found your problem.
It is a messy job but it can be done with the pump in place. Sometimes twisting the valve 90 degrees can make a difference on operation.
I even tested with stronger springs with some success.

Where can you order a new pump ??Waiting for the heritage program........

Interesting. Will look into this. Thanks for the advice.

Also, If the power steering pump reservoir is like the Toyota pick ups and Tacomas, there’s a screen on the bottom of the reservoir that gets clogged I would clean the screen and flush fluid with ATF! The valve is below the screen. You may have to take off the reservoir to do that shine a light down there and see if it’s clogged. My son’s Tacoma power steering was going out randomly, then back exactly as you described. Just my 2 cents.

I’d check with cityracer. They show out of stock on his website now but they might be able to help. No affiliation, just a happy customer.
