power steering fluid boil over

The groaning noise is because the pump is cavitating or sucking air into the system, which makes all the foam. Either the fluid level was too low to start with or there is a leak on the suction side. Try flushing and refilling it. Check the fluid level with it running and after you shut it off. If the fluid level rises when you shut it off, there is still some air in the system.
Viel gluck.

When I replaced the P/S pump w/ an OEM new unit it groaned a few times first thing in the morning the first week or so that I used it but the noise went away and hasn't come back for a year +now. Probably just the last of the air pockets being pushed through.

are you running a thicker fluid?

Yes, I used Lucas PS fluid plus ATF, the Lucas is like molasses.

Pin_Head, I think what you said was my problem, rather then the pump going bad. I've got the groaning to stop.

Thanks-

I think the Lucas is the problem. Is there any reason you did not just use straight up ATF? That is what the manual says...

No reason, I got the idea from other people on this forum that said they run Lucas in their system. There's no problem anymore, I believe there was still some air in the system. PS is operating normal now.
