Can I use a box of this type for a power steering upgrade on an FJ40
gearbox.webp

What type of donor vehicle is the box from? There are write-ups about several different types of power steering modifications in the FAQ's

I'm no authority and am often wrong, but that looks like an IFS box? The mini truck conversions I've seen, including my own, uses the 79-85 Toyota 4wd Pickup/4runner gear box. The tell tell sign for me is the IFS boxes are mounted with 3 bolts, the 4wd with 4 bolts....I think.

Don't take my word for it, there are several good threads in the FAQ section that covers ps conversions.

Yes that's a ifs the straight axle is a push pull boxlike a stock 40
Really depends on tire size and use
My 4 runner steered ok on the road but struggled in the rocks
38.5 boggers on a sas
And box would start leaking after about six months
Have a 40 with a 78 bronco box steers great
But was a po hack mess shock hits box

60 series box, do a search...

It appears to be an IFS box. I did that conversion just because I had several people who said it couldn't be done. Here is the link if you would like to proceed.

I do like it better than the mini-truck conversion as you eliminate a lot of linkages/slop in steering but I think the 60 or Saginaw is probably a much better conversion. I'm no expert, but that's just my opinion. I'm very happy with the outcome and have wheeled with it many times, handles good on the road as well.

Get ready to fabricate parts or do bunch of research on this. I'm not very well informed on the vocabulary of steering but I had to fabricate a tie rod end to connect to the pitman arm. If your a little unsure go another route. The whole way through the project I wish I had!!!!
