What's the cutoff for early/late 60 boxes?

I believe, without being certain, that it's 4/85. It's when ever the cross member changed that holds up the transmission. Easy enough to tell by looking at the box. Early the mounting hols form a square pattern, in the later boxes, one of the holes is offset wider.

So just for fun, if a guy wanted to upgrade his 80 box with the 105 sector shaft and parts what all is required to do so. Sorry this morphed into something other than a 60 box question. Beno if you got some time, what would a guy need to beef up the 80 series box and could we get them from you?

Sector shaft, corresponding pitman arm, and a gear box reseal kit. That's all you need. You can do it yourself or send out to have done.

Yes, those parts are readily available. Around $500 for everything, give or take.

Couldn't you then bolt that beefed-up 80 box into the place of a late '60 box?

I don' think we've yet left the realms of good '60 tech...

Yes you could and that's what I'm planning to do. I fish plated and sleeved my 55 frame for a late 60 box, but want to upgrade to a supped up 80 box. Good tech! :)

Alright, another question on the pitman arm. You guys with the 105 sector and pitman arm in an 80 box mounted on your 60, does the 105 pitman cause any problems since it doesn't have the same drop as a 60 does. Any thoughts.

I found Beno's write up on the 105 swap, very good info...And Next on the List: Rebuild PS Gear Box/New Sector Shaft/Pitman Arm

Well, I found out one thing the 80 box/pitman arm hits my 55 frame, so has anyone tried fitting a 60 pitman arm on the 80 box? Same splines?

Never mind, found my answer.

Sounds like your making progress, Pics Ron?

Not really, I'm figuring out what will work and what won't. My problem is trying to match up 105 parts in an 80 box on a 55 frame with a 60 front axle. Not too hard, I knew I should of stayed down in the pig section. :) It's what I get for looking around.

Well thanks for blazing trail on this, I have a tired 62 box I was going to send out, kinda waiting now to see how your franken-box turns out.

Mine had a catastrophic failure & dumped all the fluid from the bottom. If I need to source a used sector shaft, is the 80 sector shaft, interchangeable with the one from an early 60 box?

The 62 box will work great on the 55, it has a deep drop down pitman that clears the 55 frame nice.

Good question, I don't know the answer. I do know they both share the same spline count, but I believe everything is bigger in the 80 box.
