My 97 LX, 100k, recently began to misfire terribly and puff white smoke and up to this point has been purr-fect - cel is on throwing 0300 (miss) codes and p0173 (too rich). Smoke has strong fuel odor. Exhaust manifold has Gas/oil seepage. I think its gotta be a injector stuck open. Has anyone encountered this problem. I'm defintely a newbie and could use some help. Thanks in advance.

white smoke usually means HG. How much are we talking?
Usually, but white is also fuel.

Run your truck and unplug each injector one at a time and see if the smoke goes away. Please be aware that it is possible to hydrolock (and then shoot a rod out the side of your block) your engine with a stuck injector.

Thanks for responding guys, it blows big clouds of white smoke when i give it gas. Were talking enough to get the neighbors weinnie dog feeling bulletproof . I dont know if I did the right thing but i pulled out the spark plugs and when the key is turned to the on position (not cranking the engine over) but just to the ON position I see 3-4 puffs of fuel shoot up in a mist over # 5. This is all new to me, but common sense tells me that just aint right. thanks for any advice, Im praying it aint the HG yet, at least not till income tax time rolls around again - heehee.

Check the injector wires where they pass the EGR valve. The wire harness may have to be cut open to see them clearly. The wires get crispy and break from EGR heat causing problems like yours.

I always thought that rich fuel was black smoke.

If you are pushing that much white smoke out of the exhaust I have to believe it's an HG. Do a compression check on the engine before continuing to run it.

Black fuel smoke would mean rich- combusted fuel. White fuel smoke would mean ungodly rich- raw, uncombusted fuel. :)

I swapped out injector # 5 and she running just like a top again SWEEEET!! Do you think there is an underlying issue that may have caused this stuck injector. All maintenance has been preformed meticulously since new- inj serv/throttle body brush out every 30k - but still had this problem. Should I have dealer clean them out again to perhaps avoid same prob w/ different injector. It normally costs me $200 bucks or so.

There could be. Did you take a look at the harness as suggested above? Did you send the old injector out for service? Are you sure it was stuck open?

Just changed fluids and greased u joints/shafts and took her a ride, she drove smooth as butter. I checked wires by EGR valve and looks ok, but I'm still going to take the injector down to an injector shop on monday. Let you know if it was okay or not - just in case anyone cares to know. I'm so glad we've got this forum. Thanks, Raymond.

I would look at the injector clips & be sure there is no corrosion. Sometimes just taking off the harness will provide you with a temporary good connection.

Went to fuel injection shop on my lunch break and they said they'd charge me 30-40 bucks to clean injector and test it (a charge I'd rather avoid since I've already replaced it). They said they could hear it click off and on so said it is probably good but couldnt say for sure. Is it possible to be stuck open and still hear it "click"? Upon closer examination the wrapping around wiring behind egr is defintely cooked/blackened and crumbles if you rub it . I'd like to rewrap it - is that material avail anywhere? or any suggestions?
