possible right birf issues?

Allright, i'll just have to dig back in. I may as well open both sides while i'm there. I'm heading to the beach this weekend so it may be a week. I'll post back what i find.

You're going to have to pull that birf - I'm 98% that it's damaged badly. Fortunately you've got a spare if you get in there and it's more than the birf's inner clip having failed. Actually, that's wishful thinking - I'm not aware of anyone breaking that clip in use. But maybe. Hmmm.

Anyhow, get that thing out before it grenades and takes out the ABS sensor, which we all know is big $$$ since it is only available from Toyota with the entire harness. Could damage other stuff as well. Congrats on noting it before it went kabloooie!

I'll be interested in hearing what failed in there.

I agree 100%. One thing to think about - that circlip - my impression was that that was a pretty flimsy way to keep the axle shaft and birfield connected. I did not like the size of it or the size of the mating grooves it goes in or the fact that two taps of the thing inside a PVC pipe was all it took to pop the axle out or the fact that both my axles popped out without "harming" the circlip etc etc etc. I know I find reasons to worry and I started to look towards ALLLL the other things that take that sideways force other than just that circlip but still, I thought about it and now Doug, who would prolly know, says he's never heard of anyone breaking that bit through normal use! Crap there goes worry theory number 1062!!!

Anyways I really think either the circlip is gone or the cage is gone cause you should not have so much slop side to side. JMHO.

to be honest, i have serviced my front axle twice actually, but both times i put the birfield in a partswasher and cleaned it up really well without pulling it apart. So i have never actually pulled it apart.

so perhaps if a high stress side load was applied, that could be what has caused my problem. I did wheel a few months ago and did have a couple of side camber situations in which i did slide down into a rut and put enough strain to break the bead off both right side tires.

I doubt the c-clip theory. The outter birfield joint on my mini is just about identical to the 80's and I've rebuilt those numerous times and I wheel my poor little IFS truck HARD. I hate to make these compairisons but with 3 1st gen IFS trucks and 2 80's none have ever had a c-clip issue and I break the joint apart every time to re-build them and I have always re-used the c-clip, other than once when it broke taking the joint apart.

I'm really curious to what it could be, but I think you should check your front pinion nut. Though usally if the pinion nut is lose you'll get what sounds like driveline/u-joint noise.

Ben, i tried checking that when i started having driveline grrrrrr sounds. Removed the front drive shaft and with my hands and with a tool tried to jiggle/move the nut and it didn't budge.

Is the possibility of the rear end fully rulled out??

yea, i think so considering i had it on 4 jackstands laying under it listening to where the noises were coming from and they were fo' sure coming from the front, right.

Well, I just walked in from re-assembling my birfields.....god I think tonight I'll finally get it off the jack stands after a month.

The whole time I kept thinking what could be causing your problem and I cannot see how a birfield can go bad all of a sudden on the street. All I can think is the brass bushing has finally worn enough or something in the pumpkin is transfering the sound down the axle shaft.

I had a brilliant idea tonight. I'll drain the diff and see if there is any metal in there. Duhh!!! The front diff is offset to the right side, so perhaps it's something in the diff.
